mike8162 , That looks awesome. I just started stripping my RT1 B tank down and found some small dents that I will need to take care of. The plan right now is to spray it myself. Any information on any/all of the products you used will be very much appreciated.

Yes , lovely job that.
Have you lined the tank or does it not need doing?
That's my favourite design and colour. It looks odd when you mask it off to get the stripe.
Motodad stuff is top swag.

solo: I always like to skim coat the tanks with bondo to get rid of any waves or small dents that might be there. I sand this off with #80 grirt and a firm rubber block. When I can start to see through it I will go to #150 then #240. Most of the bondo is gone at this point. I then used an epoxy primer which was blocked with #240 then a primer sealer. Most of the epoxy primer is sanded off before the primer sealer(I always say less is more when it comes to primer). Cans are at work but I used Coca_Cola red (color for their machines and coolers) and then a black mixing base. Top coat is House of Kolor acrylic urethane. I sprayed three coats then let them cure for a week. After that I blocked both tanks to remove the edges on the stripes. Black is one coat thicker than the red. Two more coats of clear then they sat for another week before I cut and buffed.
shyted: Tank just had a couple small spots of rust. Prior to paintwork I used vinegar to remove it. Followed up with water and baking soda to neutralize the acid then a good rinse with distilled water so there was no flash rust. No sealer was needed.

Cheers

Any recommendations for a UK brand of yellow for my 1970 at1 ?

Was thinking - body filler - etch prime - high gloss yellow - clear coat.

Any recommendations?

Don't forget the black coat in there before the yellow. That's how the factory got the stripes: paint the whole tank black, and then mask the stripes, and then shoot the yellow, and then peel off the masking tape. Voila; there's your stripes.

I am restoring an RT2 and according to the Yamaha paint chart the gas/oil tank, headlight mounts/bucket and both fenders are all silver. When I look at the original painted parts they are very different silvers.
The lighting in the pictures is poor but you get the idea.

You are correct that the Yamaha paint code ( 35 ) is quoted for tanks as well as fenders .
This question has cropped up in the past , but don't think there was any resolution .
Perhaps they are using different cleat coats , gloss on the tanks etc , and matt on fenders .

Luckily I have a front fender original silver and the non faded oil tank to compare.

I have seen suggestions for fenders to use duplicolor de1615. Are there any matches for the tanks and headlight for the RT2?

It's been said before...this is a great thread thank you.

I took my DT360 to the paint shop for a color match, came up with this.
Nissan (5396) -Sierra Pine

The arrow points to the original color, I taped it off to see how close it was.

My 68 YG5T candy red, matched to Hyundai 2020 Elantra (code PR) One pick shows the original color comparison.
