68-71 …. 32-34 inner fork tubes was created by Drac56

Been chatting with one of the veterans here about these sets of 1970 forks and tubes Ive been considering having re-chromed.

The inner tubes on my 2-70 RT1’s both share this piston with 2 teflon like rings at the bottom of the inner tube.  The top side has a gradual machined taper from 34 to 32 which rests in what i believe to be a proprietary crown on the upper triple tree, the caliper measurement sorta giving me that impression.

The piston.. is held on a inner sleeve inside the tube by some very short pins that do not protrude through the inner tube..

So.

Has anyone dealt with removing these pistons,  and then mounting them again? Im assuming they would need to be machined so they are tight.  One set of tubes.. fell right of after a jiggle, the other set, 1 popped off with a magnet.

Next.. I wonder if the 3rd tube in these pics, with the hard transition, no teflon rings .. play out in these steel outer tubes?

Did the teflon rings act as a oil stop? What happened when they were removed?

And last but not least, could a tube 34 mm top to bottom be used in these outer steel tubes.

these pistons measure 37 ish so im guessing the steel outer tube, inside dimensions changed when Yamaha went to aluminum outside legs, lowers.

Again, thanks for any help advice in advance from the experts here.
