I think it's a fair point the very early bikes had the longer thin tail pipe( stinger) and probably the one hole licence bracket ...... Regarding the muffler I have sales literature which shows both and even the prototype muffler with the smaller chrome heat guard/dark fork tubes/ chrome oil tank/bar headlight fixings.......
My '68 is and early 6000 vin and has the shorter tail pipe ...... I was under the impression 100 - 14000+ vin were the first production run pearl white tank bikes with key features such as small head lamp ears, gas tank with metal fixing bar, adjuster to top of carb etc ...... I've not heard of these referred to as 69 bikes ...... I'm interested to know when you think the cut off between 68/69 is on the vin numbers on the first 14000?

I have seem many pearl white bikes for sale/forums with the shorter tail pipe ...... Any guesses what vin number the change on the longer to shorter 'stinger' happened?

........ Great to learn a
More about these bikes .....

Did all production run 68 DT1's lower A-arms have the Single-hole mount
for the back leg of the lower chain guard(black).

I understand that this lower chain guard with
the single-hole on each leg, was 68 only.

The 69 had the standard, one behind the left
pass. peg and the back one with two mounting holes.

The first one didn't look to be, too strong.

.

Couldn't remember for sure, so I had to go look it up in some of my Japanese literature ....
It appears they changed over to the 3 bolt guide design starting with bike number 13,625

WW . . . Can you confirm for us, if your late model (#13,8XX) bike has the 2 or 3 bolt mounting?

Lots of good info here about the 68, I don't know much about the 68 DT1, but I agree alot of people believe what they want to believe to be true. I found a numbers matching 68 DT1 this past year. I could have kept it for myself, but I let Enduronut buy it. I consider him to be the #1 expert on the 68 DT1 (and more). I knew having more 68 DT1's would help back up all his research and findings. The only condition was, that if it was to be sold or parted out I wanted it back :haha .'

When I was stationed in Japan, we both visited the Yamaha Factory and viewed a lot of neat stuff on the "68 DT1" in the Yamaha library".

No offence taken ..... Just interested in clarifying the information quoted on the muffler tail pipe in relation to year of production ......
Probably best if I post up some photos when I get a moment as it will be easier than me trying to explain and confusing people .... Will do this when I have a moment ...
Part of the DT1 ownership for me is not only collecting, working on and riding the bikes but also about amassing any literature in the form of factory manuals, parts lists, sales brochures, magazine & Internet articles along with gaining knowledge through forums like YE's
;-)

Mock-up, front/triple trees.

Bucket is not correct and the 'blue pilot',
(not sure about the color), for this late-production
but the early-Serial will take it, if the color is right.

Notice the single-bolt upper and lower tree mounts.
No orange front reflector and no additional holes
on the ears.

Long Odometer knob(68 only)
Aluminum Studded Front Fender
Small Tach(68 only)
Not sure about the unpainted handlebar
hold-down brackets.

RE: Brochure above

Japanese ???

That must be the different - Chrome Exhaust Guard, discussed before and
the Stinger appears to be the longer, bent one ???

The Rear-Fender Mounts, to the frame, appear to be pointing down, instead of up ???

The Kickstarter base, appears different ???

Longer Seat with Strap ???

Interesting factory-cable routing of the front brake/speedo cables ???

Lower outer, fork tubes, Chrome or Painted ???

And what is that bar(black), under the fuel tank between the petcock and the plug wire ???
