Well, I learned today that the Headlight Bucket HAD the cable indents,
running up-and-down and that the side bucket connectors, to the ears,
did NOT include the square/round rubber dampers - just metal to metal.

Were the round Fuel Tank Dampers and Frame Cups
used on ANY of the 68 production run, DT1's?

Yes . . . roughly the last 2,000 units (#13,001 ~ 15,000), used the hockey puck mounting method.

Yep,

Got two frames/engines. One early, one late.
The late frame, with the 'hockey puck mounts' is at Serial - 13,8xx.

On a related note, although I believe that most (if not all), of the 68's came with the 220mm (longer) stingers, this was one of the 1st things Yamaha re-designed on these bikes. . . . . read on

Early on, it became apparent to Yamaha that the longer stinger was getting bent and smashed (against the rear shock), whenever the bike got dropped onto it's right side . . . so most (if not all) of the replacement stingers that made it into the Yamaha dealers parts rooms, were the shorter design. I do not have a record of when this re-design took place, but it was VERY early on in 68. There's a 99.99999% chance that you will never see or find a longer nos version of these silencers.
However, Yamaha must have decided to go ahead and install the longer stingers that they had already made up . . . thus capitalizing on their initial investment.

The smaller/shorter stinger was standardized on the 69 models, and continued until the muffler was redesigned with a larger outlet starting at bike number 22,201

Winterwoods, would or could you post pics of your 1968 DT1s? I would like to see both of them.

I have a very early 1968 and a mid model year 68 DT1.both have the metal under strap mount on the front of the tank. one is serial 1009x and the other is 02xxx. there is some running changes between those two, like the smaller engine mount bolt on the upper back on the early 68 with the mid 68 having the 69-71 style and even the tool boxes on the 2 are different.

I am blessed enough both have numbers matching engines. I need basically to put the early one together and plan to do it pretty soon.

Probably should have stated before.

RE: 68 frames

On these two, I am in PPS mode.

Perpetual Parts Search :Coffee

One - the frame is pretty close, down to Headlight Lens/ Connector Harness.

Engine is on the bench.

The other is down to frame/engine cases, coming back up, slowly.

I see. the parts search for these is not easy,I learned that back in 2008 but then I scored another 1968 DT1 in the process and the man I bought that 68 from,I ended up buying a 1971 RT1B from.

I hope and pray you are as blessed at least I was when I got those other bikes.

big problem is the greed the people have when learning a bike they are parting out is a valuable classic.this is what ruins our hobby of getting these bikes back in nice running condition.

I had even seen many on ebay take parts from a more common 69-71 DT1 and advertising their parts as coming off a 1968 DT1 so be careful! I can help some and most especially Enduronut himself. in fact EN has taught me a lot on these as I went and put one together.
