Hello. Name is Mike. Live in Florida. 58 years old. I have been riding dirt since I was a kid. First bike 1973 TS 185 Suzuki next a 1974 125 Elsinore, 1974 YZ 360, 1975 MX400 (I keep this one 20 years and of coarse kicked myself for selling it.) 1979 IT 400 plus a couple more. Some how I quit riding for 20 years and wound up building Jet Skis. I got the itch again two years ago and started trading my Skis for bikes. Current bikes include:

2001 TTR 125 Yamaha
1989 Cr 250
1975 MX 400B (My restored rider painted to look like a 1975 360 YZ strap tank European edition)
And the reason I am here my new 1974 DT360.

I am in the process of restoring it and figured I would check out the treads and ask for input as needed. Oh yeah here are some pics. I will get some pics of the DT soon although it's mostly disassembled.

Nice bikes. I really like the look of your MX400B. Great paint scheme.

Let's see a thread on your new 360 project and I am sure you will see a lot of activity!

Welcome!

Hi. I'm Tony Martin.
I'll be 50 in August.
I've always been a bike nut.
My first bike was a 175 Honda street bike that I rode everywhere. In 1986 I sold it for more than I had in it, but I didn't know how much I would miss it!
I've had a lot of street bikes over the years 250 hondas, a CX 500 honda, a CB 900c (what a beast that bike was) and a V92c victory Polaris. I've always wanted an Enduro but haven'thad the opportunity to purchase one. Well that all changed when my sister in law decided to move to Texas.
She is letting me buy her 1974 Dt 175 Enduro. She is the original owner.
This little jewel was kept in a shed in Wyoming for the past 40 years and has almost 1100 miles on it. I can't wait to see her in person.
I intend to take the best care of my new bike as I can so I've been looking for a good, reliable source of information for this little bike, so I'm looking forward to picking the brains of my new found bike brothers.

Thanks for this opportunity,
MOOCH

Welcome Mooch! Great bike - Congrats! I am working on a 75 DT175 right now - very similar bikes - though mine is a major project. It was stored in a barn next to a horse stall for the past 15 and has not enjoyed it :)

We should have a service manual in the tech section that covers that bike, as well as a lot of resident experts for questions you may have. Make sure to post up some pics when you get it!

Hello all!

My name is Matt, I'm from Winnipeg up in Canada (as the name implies).

I got my first bike of any kind last year; a 1980 DT175 from a friend after his dad passed away. It was somewhere in the process of being restored to running condition, and I'm happy to say I've taken it most of the way there. The bike is ready to go in for its safety inspection, and I've taken it on the city streets to work and back every day this week (about a 15 km ride each way) without exploding or falling or destroying the engine in some way. I wish I'd gotten a bike 20 years ago!

Still have some things to clean up mechanically; the engine can overheat if I run it too hard for too long and start running away on me, and the battery doesn't charge off the engine, and the oil line to the carb develops air pockets occasionally. But compared to where I started, I'm in the home stretch now!

Here she is around the time I first got her. I'll have to get some newer pictures with all her shiny lights and mirrors and freshly painted expansion chamber.

The running away is probably an air leak, most likely caused by old crank seals. Unless the PO changed them already .... Another possibility is the top of the carb coming loose and letting air in there.

Either would explain a lean condition making it run hot.

Seals are easy. On the ignition side you'll need a puller for the flywheel. On the primary side jamming a penny in the gears will get the clutch basket and primary gear off.

To get the seals themselves out a small hole drilled into the metal outer diameter and a slide hammer with the right sized screw takes care of business every time.

Something else to consider is new brake shoes. We've seen lots of them get delaminated over time. A sudden lockup of the front wheeel ......

Yeah, putting an order together for gaskets and seals and brake pads and chain and sprockets in the next little while. Just got back from the garage, and the mechanic said that he'd also recommend new tires, so I'm trying to track those down now, too.

Cheap bikes I suppose will always be the most expensive ones.

Every day i wake up grumpy [sometimes i let her sleep in :cheer: .
Hi, Morley from NZ [RT325] 68 years old [don't remind me] & still playing/building old 'crap out of scrap'. Worked for the local Yamaha Dealer [Tim Gibbes] from the early "60's when AJS/Matchless/Norton etc-then along came Yamaha & Honda, had Honda till "76. Might have a link to an add for nz honda we did localy back then [me on the elsinore 250 in the video & hell it looks 'tame' by modern standards but good for a laugh looking back. raced [scrambled] [crashed] Royal Enfield 350 Bullet-Matchy 350 & 500-Bsa B31/33, Triumph Metisse unit T100, then along came DT1's -Yipee, but broke my leg bad on first ride on the bosses dt, actualy stopped the oposition cz in it's tracks by getting leg caught on the rear knobbly [bent the shocks] 'stop laughing'. Anyway, bought my DT1 & got familiar with every problem they had including week gearboxes of the early ones. We sold heaps at work [me in workshop] & parts were expensive down here so tried to get around problems like with the first ones 69/69 you could swap over the two gear sets of the main & lay shafts which spun them the other way to get he square side of the dogs [& get another life out of them]. Anyway-long story longer, now surrounded by 20 odd bikes in various states of repair [dis-repair], all doo run though & run better than they look. RT325 handle came about because i have a 360 with a 250 crank [experiment], plus a 250 with a 360 crank [DT1MX top end on that]. Now to top it off my 'Farm Car' Honda Vigor 5 cylinder G20A [have 4 of them, like collecting DT/RT's--illness] broke a cam belt getting firewood a couple of days ago but ran another belt on [old one i had], left all the covers off too in the end--no bent valves & running as normal. Lucky day but must be a clearance motor--is single cam too but 4 valves per cylinder, north south motor but front wheel drive, Acura Vigor think in US 1990+. Anyway, where was i--got sort of sidelined by a head injury years ago [CR500 & hit something in the long grass--so they said lol, when i woke up in hospital], so been cruising for a bit now. Have 20 acres but leased it out to the neighbour, [got my sheds though]. Also have a Lada Niva--now that's another [long] story--. Google Tim Gibbes he's been around & is still flat out [slowing down] running his transponder lap timing buisiness at age 83 or something. he rode a few desert races in US like Mint400 etc, maybe on a Maico, remember him heading off up there [from nz]. Anyway, short introduction lol. Been sticking my nose into a few subjects but sort of felt i've been gate crashing a party sorry so should have done this intro first!!. No problem if you think my ideas are a bit outside the square [just say so] but i know what works for me lol, with the words of the Boss ringing in my ears--fix it but Don't Spend Any Money. Cheers Morley Shirriffs. [NZ].
