Hello everyone, I'm Jim from Michigan and a member on YE,com.Growing up I didn't ride to much, had a couple friends that had Honda cb's a 500 and a 750.The one friend had a 75 DT 175.They'ed let me ride the bigger bikes but not much, thats ok becaused I loved that 175. well I went the next 30 years only riding a bike maybe 4 times.Till one day in late 2008 I hear my neighbor, something I hadn't heard in a long time a two stroke! Couldn't believe it,i jump up and see the smoke,i wanted it.So I go down I get him to sell me a 1977 DT 250 for $400. With the help of ye.com I got it running pretty good, and I started picking up parts for it. Then I needed eye surgery that put me out of action for months, plus near the time I was healthy enough my mother was diagniosed with stage 4 lung cancer so I moved in with her to take care of her till she passed a couple months ago. I'm ready to get back at it and hope that you guys can help. Thanks,Jim

Hi everyone, My name is Mark and I live in a suburb of Cleveland Ohio. I'm 50 years old have a wife of 25 years, and three children. I enjoy drag racing in the summer and hunting in the winter. I got hooked on trail bikes back in 1976 when my dad bought me a used Kawasaki KV75, man I must've put 100,000 miles on that thing(in my back yard) in the 2 years I had it (forgot to put oil in the injection tank and smoked the engine). Then dad got me a Kawasaki KE100, which I rode the tires off of (except when I was paying it off by painting the house, chopping wood, yard work etc.). Next came a Honda MT250, which one of his buddys turned into a mx wannabe. Then I turned 16 and bought a car and sold the bikes. Fast forward 30 years and I start looking for a pit bike for out at the drag strip, I find two Yamaha QA50's (Yamahoppers) in a barn where I deer hunt, 100 bucks for the pair and we had pit bikes! 1 is a 1979 (red) and the other is a 1980 (blue). So this past March I was bored looking at Craigslist and I see a 1974 Yamaha DT125 on there, not running, but pretty much complete. I love to fix cars, atv's, boats, bikes, most anything with an engine, so I went and picked this thing up. New rings and gaskets, crank seals, and rebuilt the carb and she was purrin like a kitten. Me and my buddies ran this thing around the neighborhood for about twenty minutes when it started to lose power at higher rpms, then lower rpms, then lower, until finally it wouldn't even start. No spark. I replaced the battery, coil, points, and condenser, still nothing. So here I am looking for answers on the google when I stumbled on to this forum, and figured there are a bunch of other goofballs like me that like these bikes, maybe we can help each other. :)

Welcome to the forum and yeah, we got a buncha mechanical goofballs hangin' around here!

And to the spark .....

These bikes have 3 separate stand alone circuits, one being the ignition. The others are headlight (runs on straight AC) and the battery/rectifier/charging system for everything else.

With the key in the ON position you're actually "enabling" the ignition by ungrounding it. Supplying a ground from the key is what shuts it off. There are black wires from the stator that go to the key and ignition coil ... and that's just about all there is.

A real common problem is when those wires get grounded. It's the same as shutting the key off.

Probably the most common place for a wire to get grounded is the wire between the points and the condenser. It gets to rubbing on the spinning flywheel and you're done.

That's where I'd look first.

Hi all. I live in Auckland, New Zealand, am a Carpenter by trade, and am in my mid fifties. My first bike was an old farm bike back in the seventies when I was around 14. I would load it into my Dads work van & get it to wherever I was going to be for school holidays & pretend I was Ivan Mauger or Mick Andrews on the hills around where I stayed. I got my motorcycle License the week I turned 15, & rode a DT125 18 or so miles to school every day for a year.It was a great bike & I did a lot of miles on it. When I had no money for petrol occasionally on the weekends, I would dismantle it on the back lawn & reassemble for something to do. I eventually sold it to buy a car. I also had a SL125 & a RD250 for a while. Rode my Brothers RD350 a fair bit as well. Then no bike till around 2002, when I bought a new KLX300 so I could trail ride with my mates. Enjoyed that for 4 years then thought I was getting too old for off roading. Bought a ST2 for the road. Still got it. Ideal for touring... Really missed dirt biking though, so I bought a TY175 to putt round the inlaws farm on, then an IT175 for VMX & classic scrambles. But I have always longed for an early Yammy Enduro model. They are almost as rare as rocking horse sh**t in this neck of the woods. But one came up for sale close by, & I bought it. 1973 RT3, 10,700 miles. My new favorite ride.

Hey Folks! Drewfinn here....just acquired a tired, beat up, 78 dt100e. Not much to look at,wiring harness cut up,painted with some sort of yellow house paint, oil injection gone bye-bye...no lights...only I could look at this mess and say "sold". Think Charlie Brown X-mas tree in bike form. not even a proper throttle handle or cable...speaking of which, any idea what length I should order or a possible match up...as there is no oilpump . Pix to come soon....
