Thanks, reading that was very helpful (RTFM!). I had never dealt with oil injection before and having the light on worried me until I found the info in the owner's manual about it being in circuit test mode while the bike is in neutral. :)

...no worries, just getting into revamping a GT80 Yamaha, 1979; all the fun associated, eh? My last project (9yrs) saw a 48Panhead build, total sucker for punishment (LoL)!! Guess I like the time absorption into these mechanical things, age plays a factor with that for sure (1960). Currently in the military (CA), going on 38yrs...forced retirement in 4yrs (guess at 60 your expiry meter implodes? (LoL). Kids are grown, so I got time to re-visit childhood memories i.e. wish I had that!! Just finished the tins on the bike, did the paint this time round...even more work than motor work!! Cheers fellow tinkers; keep the old iron a runnin!!

Welcome Dave! Very nice DT! And know that you're not the first to be concerned about the oil light... It concerned me too when I had my first Yamaha with an oil light. A few years ago I saw a video posted by a professional shop who claimed the had been in the business of restoring Yamaha's for over 10 years. They posted the video for the customer to show them how their bike came out. In that video, the guy started the bike and the oil light was on. He commented that they would top off the oil tank and it wasn't a concern. Then he put it into gear to ride off and the light went out. So sometimes even the experienced professionals don't know everything!

(And you're a step above many professionals because you found the answer! :likey )

Hi All,

New Canadian member here. I just recently picked up a '74 DT360A in very nice condition with 3600mi on the clock. I'm in the process of cleaning it up before I fire it up. Compression is right at 150psi but the bike sat for several years with a partial tank of gas so the fuel cap, tank and petcock all needed a thorough cleaning. Evaporust for the cap, electrolysis for the tank, and Berryman's for the carb. Everything is looking pretty good so far...

I had a '71 DT175 way back when and had a gas with it. It eventually ended up in Inuvik, NWT with my sister and brother-in-law. I've been building and restoring early 70's Kawasaki triples for the last several years but have always been keeping my eyes open for another dual-purpose bike.

This one was one of those "it'll never happen to me" type finds. I went to look at an unknown Yamaha 175 that belonged to this guy's wife. It turned out to be a fairly rough IT175 that I wasn't interested in (wanted a streetable bike). I asked if this is your wife's bike what did you ride? He points in behind his quad and says I have a 360 but it's not for sale, and it's mint. The guy had big plans to restore it (but admitted he wasn't very mechanical, so didn't really know when he'd get to it). And if he was ever going to get rid of it his brother had been bugging him for it for years.

It took my brother and I about 20 minutes to convince him that he was never going to do it and it was just starting to show it's age (v. few small rust spots in places) and if someone didn't give it some TLC the bike would waste away... I picked it up the next day, before his brother got wind of it. I think this one will be a keeper.

With introductions out of the way I have to say what a great site this appears to be. I've got the 360 shop manual printed and mostly read, however, this being a single year model, a complete parts manual would be a real asset for cross-referencing part nos. The parts manual is listed in the Tech section but it's only comprised of a couple of pages - basically the exploded diagram for the top end and the crankcases.

Does anyone know if the full parts manual for the DT360A is available anywhere???

I'm big on taking photos of my restorations/rebuilds so will start a 'build' thread on this one, too.

Cheers,
Neil

Hi,
I just like all motorcycles, but the Yamaha enduros style and look push all my buttons. Ive had numerous bikes from Harleys to Hayabusas and have disassembled all of them and even reassembled some .
I got into dual sports at age 50 and picked up a 1974 DT250 thinking it would be a backup bike to a DR350. Im a big guy at 6'6" 230 lbs so yeah it didnt work. I swaped out the rear shocks and made a 2006 Kawasaki KLX250 front end fit but Im too heavy for that motor. So that brings me to today.
I wanted a parts runner bike so my plan is to supermoto the DT 250. I have a KTM with a set of wheels Im using as a donor and looking for either a 360 or 400 motor to replace the 250.
Im hoping to have this done quick because I have an XS650 that also needs completing.

Hello all! I'm 58 years old and have been riding dirt bikes ever since I was about 6.

My first "real motorcycle" was a MX version of a mini enduro. After that I progressed through DT 125, 250, 360 (we would strip these down taking off lights and such to make them lighter and handle better in the dirt. Lastly I had a 500 which was the only one I ever rode on the street (at least legally that is).

After that in my 20's I went more to full on motocross bikes and had numerous brands, interestingly never a Yamaha MX, go figure? Anyway I still ride MX bikes and I'm now introducing 2 grandsons (9& 10) to dirt bikes. Started them with a Yamaha TTR 50 and just moved them up to 110's. So I decided rather than blasting them out when we ride I would take a stroll down memory lane and I bought myself a mini enduro! Attached is a pic of it in the semi on the way to Md from Fla...

Hi all, I am Michael and I live in Bozeman Montana. I just bought my first motorcycle ever and it is a 1978 DT400. I'm really stoked on it and the thing is a lot of fun but I am already running into issues but it will be a winter project for sure.
