Your bike is what I imagine Yamaha would do if the followed the car industry and reissued a modern retro version of the bike!

Thought I would give a quick update on the Black Widow- likey

Spent some time yesterday riding and continuing to dial the bike in and man o man she is now off to the races! Throttle

I decided to pull the 15/45 sprockets and go back to a 14/39 set up and now have the perfect combo with strong low end pull- Wheelies! while getting more mid and top speed range.

Here is my current set up with the RT1MX 34mm carb-

Main Jet- 260
Pilot Jet- 60
Needle Jet- P-0
Needle- 6DH2- #2 slot
Air Screw- 1 1/2 turns
Valve/Slide- 2.5mm

I received my new slides from Sudco (2.0 & 2.5mm Cut-away) on Friday and man they are the nice "heavy" brass style vs the Aluminum that Yamaha used back in the day.

I was told by more then one person at Sudco that these aftermarket slides would not fit the old Yamaha carbs- Well they are WRONG!

They have the exact same specs and fit perfectly. I am a new believer in the 2.5mm cutaway as it allowed me to dial this bike in perfect.

I even put the 2.5mm in my 1976 DT400 and made a HUGE difference vs. the 3.0 stock slide. No more surging/ jerking as the bike idles down.

Looking at my plug- still a tad rich which is good so will be taking one step at a time to get it 100%- Next step is to take the pilot down to a 57.5 as this should be my final adjustment.

I knew this bike would deliver some amazing power and pull really strong thru all 5 gears- a lot of hours invested trying a lot of different things and the reward is just amazing when you finally hit the sweet spot!

The real key to solving my issues was going to this bigger carb!

Will get some video shot tomorrow of the bike running thru the gears- stay tuned.

I can hardly wait for the video.

Greg - what part numbers did you use to get the 2.5 slide that fit your DT400? Several of us have the surging issue and have never been able to fix it. If this is an even possible fix, I know there will be a run on those!

Very cool as always!

Likewise on both accounts! I've got my 400C working very well but the decel surge is annoying and anything that alleviates it at all would interest me.
Plus---looking forward to seeing your video(s).
The Black Widow is one very awesome bike and I'm happy to read that you've got her dialed in to perfection!

I had to take my 76 DT400 all the way up to a 60 pilot jet just to get it to settle down at deceleration...

I have always thought the 3.0mm stock cut-away is just not the right slide for this bike.

So today- thought what the heck- Lets drop the 2.5mm in and see if it changes anything significantly and my hunch was right- The bike sounded better and had zero issues with the known problems.

By enriching the mixture just a tad at closed throttle with the smaller cut away the bike sounds and feels completely normal now.

Of course- I will need to re-jet the pilot a tad with this new slide but not much!

Here is the interesting thing that I found - The DT400 slide is 53.0mm in height and the standard RT1 Slide / New one I ordered is 40.5MM

Not sure this is really a big deal as the 40.5mm seems to work just fine...

I will do a little more research to see if Mikuni makes a 53.0mm slide for the VM32 carb.

I used the gloss black version of this for the first time, and I am very satisfied with the results. But I had one question, since you use it often. Do you bake the finish on, or does it give good durability just from air-drying/curing?

I have found with the "Ceramic" version of this paint is really very durable and provides a really nice coating when done properly.

For the engine area- I just make sure the metal is completely clean and use a Scotch-Brite Pad to rough up the surface a tad. I then wipe everything down with Isopropyl Alcohol to make sure surface is 100% ready so paint will adhere.

For the side cases/metal- I will bake them.

This is really a great paint and Cast Coat Aluminum is a dead match on the engine and makes it look very nice.

Thanks man!

This project was so much fun and to now see it come full circle is very rewarding.

This bike will see thousands of miles of riding in many events across the Country- Cannot wait until the end of March to load her up and head to California for a little Desert Riding!! Throttle
