I had a 1963? Yds2 back in 1965 to 1967, if I recall correctly the racing version had Amal carbs and ascot exhaust, mine was a stock bike with mikuni carbs, Yamaha exhaust, stuffed crank, we mill the heads and cut the squish band to increase the compression & volume.

Back then it was'nt called a motocross version, they were "scrambler" designation. The photo looks like a "big bear 350" to me. Zia

I trail rode a 350 Big Bear in '66. It was a hand full. I weighed all of about 135 #s and was a member of The Klondike Ridge Runners [ as in Klondike Iowa ]. I truly believe those were the good old days.

Yamaha did not have a 350 until the R5 and that later became the RD350.

the YM1 was a 305 cc bike and they did make a Big Bear version of it. this was out around 1966 and 1967.

back then they were called scramblers.

I believe the Yamaha R1 (YR1) circa 1967 was technically the first mass produced Yamaha 350 street bike.

R5 didn't appear until 1970 or so... became the RD350 in 1973.
