There was an article John Stein wrote about YDS ascot racer that is posted below. When I picked up the bike for John in San Pedro, I could not believe there was a motorcycle under all that rust. John did not have much time to build and get it ready for the Catalina race, but he did, and won his class in the process . See below:

The old enduro's were very uncommon especially the large ones.I saw all kinds of street bikes that were converted as the craze swept the nation but very few actual enduro's and of those most were 125's.The rear braces and the smaller fender gave it a tracker kind of look. The obvious signs were the pipes but also the headlight with the incoporated tach and meter was a nice indicator but lots of small things added up to a very different ride.Few examples exist nowadays but I was lucky to have grown up around some of those ole hard core enthusiasts who enjoyed them. Here is a restored BigBear,Though not as nice as the Ascot,it reflects the ones I remember most.

The article is a bit tough to read ...but hopefully if you have a big enough screen its readable ?

I have some photos I took at the Catalina Grand Prix where I met John and his scrambler for the first time. Captain Dave had fortunately made some post of Stein's race bike build during the 90 day build before the race. So when I arrived at Catalina my goal was to find John and his scrambler and introduce myself.

I think I have the rear wheel already ! :Ugh
Why do we have this disorder? ATM I sold off the
garage bikes I had , the Savage and the other IT for some more room in the shop only to fill it back up?I woke up this morning and the RAS saws had bred!I found a small parade lined up all the way to the door in various sizes.I have no idea why I have to rebuild old tools and old bikes. So what the hell is wrong with me!
