they altered the rod length/stroke ratio. using a long rod is better suited for lower engine speed as a long rod effectively increases piston speed.
the shorter rod is better suited for higher rpm and it lowers the piston speed which adds to better piston durability.
I can be wrong as it has been a long time since I studied these things. hopefully Enduronut chimes in and or Racerclam as these are top engine experts.
there was talk a long time ago in the 5.0 Mustang community about the connecting rod length and of course the stroke of the crankshaft. this is if I stroked a Ford 302 Windsor based engine I would use the 3.25" stroke which with a 4.00" bore would get you 327 cubic inches or 331 cubes with a 030 over bore. the same dimensions as a 327 cubic inch Chevrolet and we all know how that engine is, not much torque but very good high rpm power.
there was a 347 cubic Inch stroker crankshaft for the 302 Ford but I did not care for that one. it required a special piston to be used with stock rods and placed the piston pin in the piston ring area which meant poor oil control and the engine would end up using oil plus the rod stroke ratio was comparatively poor compared to the other performance engines out there.

Wondering if this was an early-production 68 DT1 Stator/Flywheel ?
Four-Wire with gray outer.

WW,
Wow, that's AAA+ paint work!! Know you're proud of finished product.
I met Tim Raines at Barber last year, nice guy & obviously very talented.
I'm "metal rescuing" my '68 tank today, taking to painter later this week.
Congrats on beautiful fuel tank!

Well, now that all of my painted parts
are back and the motor has been timed
and the leak-down test completed, on the bench,
I rolled out the frame, in order to begin - the final assembly.
This is the late-production frame, Serial # - 13,8xx - coming back up.
FINALLY...
*That motor on the table is from a DT3(...a future project)

WW,
Impressive bike!! You've raised the bar high with your beautiful '68 DT1, look forward to pics as your progress continues!!
Appears we're on similar build schedules, my '68 is now a roller. Engine built except had wrong rings, ordered new set today. Speedo & tach going to DEET's time machine tomorrow.
Great Job!

My goal in building this one, is to
approach - period correctness,
instead of working toward
museum quality - perfectness.
Perfectness is not my,
my...
whatever that is.
