I asked the same question as I have a 78 DT400E. After getting the bike all rebuilt and testing for the first time I think the original pipe is pretty darn good! Maybe that’s why no sleeper? Already well functioning.

Interesting you would ask.
Back in the day (70's) in fabricated numerous custom pipes for 2 strokes- expansion chambers for racing.
I wouldn't feel comfortable trying to duplicate an OEM pipe or without having the bike here to get a good fit.

Burlybilt…I’m not sure I understand your comment…Meis converts OEM pipes to sleeper pipes by opening them up and working on the inside. They bolt back on the bike just like Yamaha intended. I totally agree that a pipe for a bike can’t be built from scratch without the bike there.

So are they quieter, louder, etc.???
My original post was commenting on the loudness of the original OEM pipe on a 70' DT1 I just found/bought.
Appears to have a complete 2 part baffle/arrestor in the pipe, but dang, is it loud...
Thanks Dave

Meis did a sleeper pipe for my 76 DT400C and it is only slightly louder. I mean very slightly. But the power improvement was much more noticeable.
Also as I commented both my RT1 and RT3 are louder than the DT400C which has the sleeper pipe.

I've been wondering myself if there are good ways to quiet a pipe down from one of these earlier stock pipes. I've seen packing at cycle gear and wondered if wrapping the outside of the silencer end where the side holes are located would help or just kill the performance too much.

Dave (dtmeis) and I have completed over one hundred sleeper pipes for Yamaha CT's, DT's 250 and 360, and DT400's. Most end up just a little louder than stock and a few end up with more of a "pop" that is just the way it happens. Our procedure for making the sleeper pipes does not change. That's just the way some pipes turnout.
