That looks like the brake pedal return spring - if not fitted properly, it could mean that the rear brake jammed on.
Not really sure what the burning smell was - have you tried starting it again?

That looks kind of like a rear brake pedal return spring? (17 here: www.partzilla.com/catalog/yamaha/motorcy...footrest-brake-pedal) You shouldn't have had to touch that though.
Stumped on the rest of your story. Sounds like it really wasn't in Neutral. If it runs fine it's probably ok.

Unless OP has HUGE hands, that spring looks smaller than the brake return spring to me. Doesn't his model have a chain tensioner with similar spring?

I think I figured out how to fix the title of the thread to 1975... seems to have worked.
Let me know if it stayed in the same category? I didn't change the category but there was a place to and I'm not sure if it defaults to "General Discussions". I can move it elsewhere if you want.

MarkT it’s correct in the general discussion. Did you take the brake pedal off ?

Blimey--it's the brake pedal return spring.
How on earth did it get over on the chain run.
Did you lay the bike right over on the left & just by chance it took the bait & jumped over there.

Sorry i'm a page behind & answering page 13. Too slow to catch a cold me lol.
On some models 'i thought' the spring was on an extension behind where it pivots so can escape with pedal still in place.

Yep this frame type & brake pedal where spring sits out the back & can fall off if not under tension.
