Haven’t changed the brakes yet. I looked on Partzilla and brake shoes were no longer available. Any thoughts on non-oem brands and where to purchase?

Yamaha shoes are still available.  Check with the Yamaha dealer and they can probably help.  My local dealer had a chart they used.  I'm not sure of the drum diameters on that year...  120mm or 130mm?  Could have a bigger rear drum than front.  I will check later and see if I can find part numbers.

Specs show same brake shoes front and rear (130mm)  These are what the dealer sold me and they work perfectly.  (I had trouble with aftermarket shoes being undersized)

My local Yamaha dealer wasn't much help. MarkT, are you saying the brake shoes you linked should work for us?

Also, do the wheels need to be off to install these?  Was just curious if we should do at the same time we are replacing the tires...or if we could take care of the tires and then tackle the brakes when we have them on hand.  Thanks

Then your dealer is a waste of space.

I'm pretty sure that what Mark showed was the current part number, but you can double check on CMSNL.

As you're in the US, somewhere like Speed and Sport, Rocky Mountain and Partzilla should have what you're after, but maybe wait for other recommendations from US guys first (I'm in the UK). Buy genuine Yamaha kits - they come with new springs.

Yes, the wheels must be off to replace the shoes, so do at the same time as the tyres.

Yes, that is the current part number for the shoes and they should be available at any online or brick and mortar Yamaha dealer... I think partzilla is about $20 a set. (1 set for each wheel so you need 2 sets)

The brake plate basically falls out of the drum when you remove the wheel. VERY easy to change brakes.

Was able to get the brake shoes ordered through the dealer. We'll plan to install them when we tackle the tubes and tires hopefully this weekend.

I have a question about the petcock (see pic). I know we need to cut the tube lower to better match the original. But what are the plastic tubes for? Are they filters or should we remove them?

The “tubes” act as strainers. The longer pipe is your main fuel. Short one is reserve. You don’t have to shorten the longer one. It would just make you have to change to reserve sooner.

Yes, leave the white strainers.

Reserve is kind of supposed to leave you like 1/2 gallon so you know to head back or find gas... if the new tube is a lot longer than original, you end up with like 1/2 gallon normal running and a 1.5 gallon reserve which is very annoying and sort of defeats the purpose of "reserve".

One other factor is running on the taller pipe longer is simply better.... moisture and debris tends to settle at bottom of tank... the standpipe keeps cleaner fuel going to the engine... when on reserve the fuel is drawn from the bottom of the tank where everything settles.

As I mentioned earlier in the thread, I did cut the taller pipe down to somewhat match the stock petcock, but if I were to do it again might leave it as-is. The taller pipe has a groove at the top, so it holds the strainer on well. When I cut it down I had to make a half-ass groove with a hacksaw to keep the strainer on, but many months later, it is staying on. As everyone said, you'll just hit reserve quicker. Even though you'll be using an inline filter, the strainer helps, and I would keep it on.
