Where in CA? If in the Bay Area, Jody @ Unlimited Motorsports in Livermore can do it right, he's done some of mine. (925) 456-6500. If not in Norcal, but willing to ship, Bill Bune in Minnesota has also done some work for me and they are fair and quick. www.billbune.com

Spoke with Paul at P J Motorcycle Engineers today, a very helpful chap.
Having sent him photos of the crank and talked it through, he's recommended machining the pitted area where the crank seal sits (not where the bearing sits) from 25mm diameter down to 24mm diameter and fitting a 24x40x8 seal.
I've checked a double lip seal is available in this size.
I'll make sure he leaves a radius on the step to avoid a stress point, but I can't imagine the reduction in diameter will cause any problems.
If anyone thinks reducing the seal diameter will cause a problem let me know.
He'll rebuild the crankshaft as well.
Will let you know how it turns out

Any more news? I just pulled apart my 1970 CT175 (different crank?) and also found rust where it was put away wet and left for years. On the LH side, there is what I call heavy pitting very close, or at, the sealing area. So I either need a different crank or have someone in US rework that portion (in addition to the rod overhaul). More eye's or advice is welcomed! Joe

I only sent mine off this week and it's about a 3 week turnaround, so I can't say how it turned out yet.
Pretty confident it'll work.
If you're in the US you could pick up a replacement part or have your current one machined the same way I'm having mine done.
Either way, if I were you I'd have the crank rebuilt, since you've gone to the trouble of removing it.
Having the seal diameter machined was only £15 and the crank rebuild with new rod and big end about £100.

PJ are bang on. I never ever have trouble with them. I send everything to them Pete.
If they post out, normally it's next day.
If you decide to trundle up there, make sure you don't follow your sat nav. Mine sent me in to a bus only lane and Wolverhampton council bummed me £80 .

“PJ are bang on”
It was you Dave that recommended them, which is why I contacted them.
I’ve sent it via Hermes, much as l’d have loved to see their workshop, it’s a bit far for a jolly.

I'm sending my DT 3 stuff to them Pete.
The crank on my CT 3 is not from a CT of any description. The threaded stator end is sticking out by 10 threads instead of 2 when the two washers and the nut are on holding the stator and torqued up.
But i now have ignition and it works.
