64 degrees in Denver today... so better take advantage of the nice weather.

Time to start stripping the RT3 Tank to get it ready for next steps- body filler, prep for some fresh Paint, Decal and Clear Coat.

I know today's stripper is almost crap since our Government got involved... and have to say Yamaha back in the day put some very tough paint and decals on!

Found it interesting on the RT3 Baja Brown... had a pretty thick coat of silver metallic to give that paint some depth.
Now just lots of sanding and scraping to get the tank down to bare metal then will be time to start smoothing things out with a little filler.

Here's my vision for this tank- DT2 MX decals with silver background under stripe and Gloss black tank

That should look good! I’ll second the the yamaha paint. A few years ago I took my rt3 rear fender with me to my brothers for a painting vacation in orange co. ca. Stripping that was the biggest nightmare. Aircraft stripper was used repeatedly after the sand blaster failed. We didn’t have a great setup, but it did everything else ok. They must’ve dipped that fender in lead first. Probably shouldn’t have stripped it all the way. Any way, always like to see your projects.

Now that the Holidays are almost over.... time to continue to get the bikes ready for Cali Dream'in 2020- #7!

Got the Black Widow RT3 tank all stripped now and received my 1972 DT2MX tank decals. I only use decals from Speed and Sport as they are top notch quality and the clear really lays nice over them.

It is always a guessing game when you attempt to put decals on a tank that were designed for a entirely different shaped tank... But these decals will work very nice and give the bike a real aggressive look with the big/bold red stripe. Seeing Just a couple compound curve areas on front corners to work around... some low heat and patience is the key and shortening the stripe on the back- but all in all lay almost perfect!

Worked most of the dents so minimum filler will be needed to make it perfect. Time to mix up some filler and go to work!

Dang- just 69 days before I pack up and head to SoCal for Cali Dream'in 2020!

As always get excited this time of year to make sure things are on track with the bikes.

The MX400 is serviced and ready to go... just a little more detail cleaning to do and she will be ready for the trailer. This bike ran perfectly last year as was 100% dialed in. Have not ridden the bike since last Cali Event (April 2019) and today she fired up on the 3rd kick!

So... time to get the Black Widow bike up on the stand.

10 minutes later-

Everything looks great- no signs of any leaking around the head or base gaskets and the oil lubrication on all parts is superior!

I am a real fan of the Mag 1 and all that I have used for many years.

I did have a little lean condition going on last year at Cali Dream'in with this bike when we were running back to camp down the highway coming back from Big Bear... so time to do a leak down test to see what is causing it. Pulled the old tired MX 34mm flange mount carb and stock manifold and then did a leak down and holds air perfect... so feel my issue was all in the intake area and not sealing properly.

Will be installing a new 34mm Mikuni spigot mount carb and rubber manifold- time to scrap the old set up- Should solve the problem!

Got my freshened up Cylinder/new Piston along and will be installing my "284" MX high compression head and the almighty Dave/Don Sleeper pipe- the bike will deliver some big power!

Now time to do some body work on the tank to get it ready for paint and decals!

Finally got some time to finish up the filler work on the tank and then the final light fill with the glazing compound to clean everything up... smooth as butter now!

So next step will be to apply 3 coats of primer- wet sanding between each coat

This image is hidden for guests.
Please log in or register to see it.

Will be using $12.00 worth of Rustoleum Spray paint in 2 colors- The Rustoleum is a great match for the SprayMax Y2k Clear- goes together with no issues

Will take the Gloss Silver and lay down couple of coats just where the decal will set to allow silver to come thru clear area on the decal stripe... Once Decal is applied will tape it off... on to the next step

Once decal is taped off- apply 3 coats of flat back to bring it all together- use scotchbrite between coats for a perfect smooth finish.

Final step is to remove the tape off the decal and apply 3 coats of clear and it should sparkle!
