That is probably one of the most sanitary and gorgeous DT's on the planet! I have followed your blog on the build and continue to be in complete awe!

Well, I made it! Finally crossed over Yay2 Some of you may remember me from the other site, but my name is Ian and I love Yamaha motorcycles! I did my first complete restoration over a year ago with a 1970 AT1, learned a heck of a lot in the process and met some great enthusiasts. I have some new projects in the works and hope to branch out further as time goes by.

Riding is a great passion of mine and I've been trying to step out of my comfort zone a little bit at a time the last few years. Bought a newer YZ 450 about five years ago and started riding more poker runs and made some extra trips to the local track then about a year later I got a wild idea that I wanted to get into vintage racing. So, I bought a 77 YZ 400 in fair condition and cleaned it up a bit then did my first desert race on it. Now that bike is torn down and in boxes with the hopes of becoming a better version of itself. I dubbed the name of that bike project "Canadian Desert Master" because I want it to be set up as a desert racer instead of a track bike, but the Canadian facet of the name stems from the color scheme I plan to use, which will be red and white (like the European and foreign models).

My other project is a 74 DT 175 that actually used to be one of my dad's bikes. Bought it fairly cheap last year along with a 71 DT 250 that I may or may not turn into a project as well. This year I rode in a few local scramble races and in the spring my first vintage trials event. Trials is a blast and I hate to say it but sooner or later I'm going to have to invest in a trials bike. Well it's good to be here among fellow enduroholics, see you around.
Had a Honda once.... then my dad told me to put childish things aside and grow up..... I listened.

Hello everyone! Like probably many people here, I started riding when I was young, quit for a while for college and early work life, but got back into it in 2000. I currently have both a lightweight dualsport bike (09 WR250R), a adventure bike (08 KLR650), on/offroad sidecar rig (06 KLR650 w/Sputnik sidecar), and a trials bike (04 Beta Rev3 270). I (think) I'm about to have a 1972 DT250.. A friend of mine has one that's been sitting in his barn since forever ago when it broke the clutch actuator spool thingie in the LH sidecover and wants it gone, so that's my reason for joining here. Probably gonna need the help of this forum as I try to do a resto on her during our long Michigan winters!

Welcome Andy!

The part that you speak of being broken can be quite spendy and hard to find, but there is an aftermarket solution documented on the forum here, as well as some alternatives using some street bike actuators from that era which are being reproduced. Don't forget to add some pictures of the bike when you get it!

Sounds like you have a pretty darn enviable stable of rides!

Im an old cowhand from the Rio Grande...well not really but I do have a horse, boots, hat, colt six guns in .45 Long Colt an 1894 Lever gun in 45/70 and I love to shoot but I dont hunt.
My first bike was a Columbia 26" Blue and white with lots of chrome, lights, parcel rack horn enclosure, cross bar on the handlebars. Dang thing cost $125.00 way back in the early fifties. Wish I could find one like that today. My first one with a motor was an orange Salisbury. WHAT A SCOOTER! Costing aroung $17,500.00 today if you can find one. Was the first use of the variable speed 'transmission.' That is pretty much of a milestone. It would outrun the dickens out of those Cushman Eagles. Ten HP Fairbanks Morse engine and it would spin the wheels. Mom found out it would run faster than 70 MPH and it was gone. Been on Harleys, Kawasakis, Yamahas and other unmentionables. I recently had a new Honda VTX 1800. Had to go for that because fumes started to bother me and Honda had the FI that solved that problem for me. Currently I have a 175 SL Enduro in gold trim, all original and running. I am restoring a 1969 BSA 650 Scrambler with the high pipes, chrome tank and that beautiful BSA Emblem. So howdy all. I live in a swamp in Georgia.

Hello! My name is Paul, from Louisville, Kentucky. I got into motorcycles last year when I bought a '76 XS650. I made the leap into enduros last week when I picked up a '71 RT1B at a farm in rural Indiana. The craigslist post said it was a '75 DT250, but I immediately saw it lacked the rounded head of that year and recognized it as a fairly early bike. It made the hundred bucks I paid him well worth it I think, and he was happy to have sold it to someone who knew what it was. It is in rough shape, rusty all over, and seized. I've got it partially torn down now, hoping to do a thorough refresh/light restoration rebuilding and reconditioning everything I can to save money. The only thing I haven't been able to find so far is a tank that isn't dented! I'll be on here asking lots of questions (especially once I get the case split).
