Hi everyone. My name is Mark Barnhart. 63 years old, 50 years of motorcycles. Recently retired and wanted a project to kick things off. In addition to a couple of Honda bikes (2016 F6B, 2013 CB1100), I have acquired a 1973 ct3 175. It was in pretty neglected condition, but I have cleaned it up and added chain, sprockets, battery, recovered seat, amongst other things. It ran when I bought it, but was jetted for higher altitude, so the carb is off undergoing a cleaning and return to stock settings as per the shop manual that I found online.
Beyond that, motorcycles have always fascinated me and I’ve owned approximately 40 bikes since I was a teenager, most of them street bikes . Enduro bikes have appealed to me for as long as I can remember, and I look forward to getting this bike up and running properly again soon. Good day, all.

 from near Salisbury, UK.

Also replace both sets of brake shoes. Originals are still available from Yamaha and you should be able to find the current part numbers from Partzilla and CMSNL.

Thanks for the advice.  I will follow suit and get the brake shoes from Yamaha.  There seems to be a wealth of information and generous people on this forum.  I appreciate it now and in the future as well.  Thanks for welcoming me.

Welcome!

Rear shoes for your CT might not show available in Yamaha parts list...  they should be 130mm diameter drum.  Picture below are the currently available shoes I use on the 175's with 130mm drum.

Later models had 130mm drums front and rear...  (yours should have a 110mm front drum and shoes still showing available in parts lists). Aftermarket shoes are sometimes undersize and don't seem to fit as well as Yamaha shoes.

Greetings everyone. Glad you're here. I'll try to keep this brief cuz no one wants to read a wall of text from some hillbilly.I drove 8.5 hours to Chicago, IL to pick up a 1984 IT 490 with a title about 15 years ago. I sent the motor off to Eric Gorr for a refresh\rebuild. It's my understanding it was one of if not the last motor he did when he had his own shop. I drove 5 hours to get a 1987 Yamaha YZ250 in Butler, PA. Those that know the IT490 can probably figure out where I'm going with this. It was my dream project and I never made progress towards it's completion, hell, I never took the motor out of the tote after the rebuild. In 2023 I lost the house my grandfather built over COVID BS. I I wasn't gifted nor did I inherit the house, I bought it from the estate. My "friend" had a rental truck business. He said since I already had six storage units full of stuff I could use a broken down box truck at his shop for storage as a favor. Well, the box truck got sent off for repairs and I was never advised of it. My "friend" didn't remember that I was using the truck. The approximately 10k worth of belongings in the truck were gone. He claimed the truck was emptied before he sent it off but I know it wasn't cuz I checked on it 10 days before it disappeared and he never bothered to inform me it was emptied or even gone. The IT490 motor was in that truck. So I'm praying and hoping I can find a reasonably priced, complete IT490 or WR500 motor here. Frankly, the other $9K of material belongings I lost in the truck really don't care. I just want to finish that bike and put tags on it. Thank you

First off, welcome. So many great folks here that know these bikes!
I’m sorry to hear of dastardly dealings with the fella.
Friends like that, who needs enemies.. I hope you get a lead and find your bikes..

Welcome from NZ. That's a he'll of a story. Let's hope for some better news soon. I had an IT490  about 30 years ago. But in more recent times I had an IT490 with a YZ465H motor. All fun bikes.
