Clarification on Yamaha part Numbers was created by Drac56
Hi all.. new to the site but see a lot of experience being shared here.. hoping i can impose from time to time.
I am gearing up for a complete restoration of a 1970 360 RT1 that Ive held onto since High School.. The bike has been in dry storage, dry climate..
As Im doing the takedown i am sorta shopping for parts.
Regarding part numbers in my Parts and Service manual 70-71, many part numbers are still available as the book is calling out..
I read a article here written by administrator that laid out a lot of info..
First 3 numbers, first year used.. ie:214 / 1970
Next 5 are the part id.. prefaced by a W if memory serves referencing a group.. ive not seen that yet
Next 2 a revision..
My question to the experts concerns interchangeable parts through models and years.
For example:
My manual calls out a lighting coil (2) / stator plate
275-81314-20
Is a 233-81314-20 the same application/part .. just a earlier year and would it work if that part was needed.
Id appreciate any incite.
Cheers,
Drac

Hi,
I am by no means an expert but I was pointed down this route when I first joined. if you look in the “how to” section in the tech library
there is a thread called decoding Yamaha part numbers (or something like that).
yamaha-enduros.com/index.php/workshop/de...-yamaha-part-numbers
this shows you the first 3 numbers are actually the model code.
for fitting to various models I was pointed to the cmsnl web site. www.cmsnl.com/en-gb/yamaha-rt1-1970-usa_...ghting-2_2758131420/
Look up you part and it shows what other models that part was used on. It’s a really good place to start looking. The partzilla website also does this I think. www.partzilla.com
hope this helps and I am sure I will be corrected if incorrect.
cheers.

I love taking stuff to bits - putting back together is another thing altogether.

I agree with Ian (Tinker man).
Generally I try to stick to the specific part for a specific bike. However, it is quite possible that other parts can be "made" to fit with little bother.
Regarding your lighting coil, CMSNL has a photo of the 233....... part, and this has 5 wires. There are new 275..... parts on fleabay, and these show 4 wires, so maybe a fitting issue here. Also, they might be different sizes.
CMSNL and Partzilla often show if a part has been replaced (aka superseded).

Regarding your stator plate question . The 233 prefixed plate is for a 250 primarily . The 275 plate is for the early 360 .
The early 360 had a cam advance mechanism in the flywheel . The 250 did not .
The flywheels and stator plates have to match , as the ignition points are mounted in slightly different positions .
Technically you could install a complete 250 system on your 360 , but that could be problematic .
The 360's had a bit of a reputation for a nasty kickback , when attempting to start .
With the 275 stator , the timing is retarded for initial starting . With a 233 stator it would be on full advance already .
In 1971 Yamaha fitted a compression release to the cylinder to further assist starting , and in 72 abandoned the
ignition advancing stator and flywheel . It has been suggested previously that rearding the ignition from factory settings
a bit , also reduces the kickback tendency .
