I've seen the points set a little wide a time or two, that will definitely get ya a good kickback! If your keyway is intact, a safe bet is to set the points gap on the low side of spec. .013" or slightly less.

In a sense, a bike that has brutal kickback is a low grade theft deterent, like a car with a manual transmission. 

Decomp also blocks down to the exhaust port outlet like it does from cylinder to decomp. Plus decomp valve assembly itself over a long period of years if it's never been done.
