I know I'm late to this thread and this may have already been said but my 76 DT400 would kickback on occasion even when timed correctly and I was scared to kick it with anything less than work boots, even at that it would hurt my the arch of my foot and sometimes leave a bruise when kicking even a little. I put the Vape 12v conversion on it and will now kick it over with tennis shoes on (or sneakers for you east coast folk). It has made such a difference in starting the bike.

I usually wear Sketchers walking shoes, the most comfortable shoes I've ever worn, anyway I decided that today would be the day I got off my butt and fire the DT400 up for the first time in probably 3 months, while I was wearing my walking shoes I didn't feel the need to change them, kicking the monster over was easy as can be...  Flip flops, well I'm not one to wear them while riding so haven't tried them, who knows, never say never

I have been cranking a Dt 360 for 50 years most of the time with tennis shoes. I can't remember ever having a problem.

Sneezles, the rt2/rt3 did not having any timing retard, as far as I'm aware.  So even if your compression release functions well, they can be a little fussy.  I've seen the compression release passages get clogged as well.  Both my original rt1b cylinder, and a rt3 cylinder I have were initially clogged with carbon.

I used to ride my CT-1 wearing huaraches sandals, from Tijuana. They had soles made from old tires, so I figured they were okay for riding :o)
