Multiple bikes was created by Roadking

Just wondering how some of you guys can afford to ride multiple bikes. Registration in California is killing me and it looks like it’s going to get worse! Didn’t really want to sell my dt3 when I got the new xt250. Insurance is cheap enough but reg on the old bike was over $125 a year, we don’t want to talk about the Harley or Duramax. Do you guys just put them on non op or what? Let me in on the secrets to enjoying multiple toys. Mike

I have 13 with vintage plates. Paid 1 time title/registration tax and plate fee. Insurance is $65 per year for each. No annual taxes or inspections after that. I live in Virginia.
The hours spent riding my Enduros is not deducted from my life span.

In the Victorian State of Australia we have a Club Permit system for bikes and vehicles over 25 years old. You must be a member of a registered club (minimal cost for some clubs ) and the Permit costs around $A70 per year and this allows you 45 days use - (can be increased to 90 days by paying an extra $A70 ) It involves dating , signing and carrying a small Log Book (simple and easy ) whenever using the bike or vehicle. It has proved to be a very popular system ..........lots more old cars and bikes out and about since the inception of the Permit system.

I think Montana has a one time fee of $25 each for trailers and motorcycles. May have to put them in my daughters name and register them there. Not entirely legal but how else am I going to fill my garage!

I know someone who keeps them all insured and keeps one of the old bikes registered. Then he swaps that one plate from vintage bike to vintage bike.

He said he never gets pulled over and if he does he doesn't think they will check the VIN or know the difference between a DT2 or DT400. He's over 70 so if they do check he figures he would just say he got confused and put the plate on the wrong bike. He has them all insured in case of accident so he thinks be okay even then.

I'm not old enough or brave enough to try that method... but I understand where you're coming from. Registration is not too expensive here for old bikes but it adds up. I've been slowly not re-registering some of my bikes when they come up for registration. I haven't been able to ride much the past few years.,,, need to sell a few I guess.

One would think that Minnesota would be real expensive but mine are $19 per year for standard plates. We have antique plates but there are restrictions on when they can be ridden so I opt for the standards.

I have all mine (9) registered and insured. The registration just rose from $17/year to $30 per year. Insurance, including theft, runs about $40/year. The last time we got new plates instead of just new stickers, I went in with every title and got them all issued with plates in sequential order. The problem is in finding the right registration and insurance card in the gun safe for the bike I want to ride when I want to ride it...
Also, if I sell one, I can use its plate on another new bike, and a portion of the registration money goes toward that new bike.

I also live in CA (San Diego) and I just pay it.
I have a Crf450r, 2 Yamaha Zuma Scooters, and a DT3 project. All have current registration, when they become projects I drop to storage insurance only.

Gotta pay to play. Try to justify the cost as part of the hobby, much easier to stomach.

Also - please vote for lower taxes and don't just move out of state :)

As 1971DT250 said, here in Virginia it's a pretty good deal. If the vehicle / bike is 25 years old you can get a antique plate. It's a one time $50 and good for as long as you own the vehicle. No annual regestration or fees, no annual inspection. Back when I was in North Carolina you could get a antique plate for a car but not offered for bikes. The Charlotte chapter of the VJMC was instrumental in getting antique plates for bikes. Unfortunately they cost more than a regular plate, they were considered and cost same as a vanity plate.
