They don't shift too easy on the bench. Make sure you are spinning the shafts (at least one shaft) when trying to shift so the dogs can align with the slots.

Sorry Mark, I didn't explain that very well at all. I was turning the shafts as I was rotating the cam. The cam turned easily enough and I could rotate it about one notch or what felt like one gear change in either direction but no further. It felt like it was actually changing the gears inside but with the cases back together I couldn't say for sure. But no matter which position the cam was in, neither shaft would rotate a more than a few degrees. What I think had to be happening was that the ears (or whatever they're called) on the sliding gears were engaging adjacent gears when they weren't supposed to. So if that is what's happening I'm trying to figure out where I went wrong. Wondering if the the cam has to be in certain position when or if the gears need to be in certain position, such as neutral during installation. Hard to explain and I'm probably failing badly at doing so. Anyway I'm going to take it back apart tomorrow and see if I can figure out what I'm doing wrong.

I don't know that you "need" to... but I generally assemble in neutral.

.

No , don't buy it! . . . Partzilla would be wrong if they suggested that!
The 214 and 431 rods will both work (c/c of 130mm, ... but the 510 rod "center to center", is 5mm shorter @ 125mm.

Heh, so all I need to to is hold the cam, 2 forks, 2 pins, and 2 gear shafts all together, keeping the fork nubs engaged in the cam channels plus hold the individual gears in the neutral position and then sit it all down inside. You guys must be magicians, or have three hands.

Thanks again Mark, I'm gettn ready to give it another go this morning. I'll figure it out sooner or later.

Jack also be sure you put the cam stopper back in so the cam stops in exactly the right spot and doesn't try and "hang up" between gears while your rotating. You should be rotating the gears the correct direction too...as if the motor is running. Easy to rotate a gear clockwise for testing when it really might be spinning CCW with motor running.

As a test, when I'm checking my assembled case, I find neutral then put it in first and count the rotations of the chain sprocket in relation to the spinning of the clutch hub. First gear should have a slower rotation and with each turn of the cam (gear change) the sprocket should turn faster until you've reached 5th gear. Hope that helps.

Seller on ebay has a kit that sounds right but he's using the 510 part no.

From his ad:

Yamaha RT3 Dt 360 MX360 DT360 Connecting Rod Kit Replaces # 510-11651-00 NEW!

Then scrolling down the ad there's this:

NOTICE!
I sell 2 different Rod kits for these old Yamaha's -
THIS one is 130mm long center - center ( for the 360/400 and TY Models )
the other one is 125mm long ( most of the old 250 models ) - make SURE
you get the right length for your model!!

A Rod kit for the old Yamaha RT 360's MX360 DT360 and other models using the 130mm Center - Center rod.....Replaces these OEM Yamaha Part Numbers: 510-11651-00

So it sounds like it's the right rod, (130mm c-c) but he's using an incorrect Part number.

So anyways, got the shifter and gears installed correctly today. Put the case back together and shifted through all gears with no problem, found neutral right where it should be so all seems to be working now. Not sure what I was I doing wrong, seemed relatively easy when I finally got it . Hopefully I can repeat the process one more time on final assembly.

Gonna call the ebay guy about the crank kit and make sure the rod is indeed the 130 mm and order the kit if it is. Then when I get that, everything gets sent off to Bill Bunes and wait for them to let me know the boring size they feel is necessary and order a piston and ring set from Enduronut.

Think I can fabricate a crank installation tool going off the pics I've seen of them so gonna start working on that tomorrow.
