bad stator ? looking for some education was created by Reed valve Richards
hello all, i hope you made it through most of the winter. winter is now over here, yay
ive been madly fixing a 1983 honda xlx250r basket case
bike is now running and idling, shifts through all gears has power is fast enough for an old fart like me
at idle i can get a NEUTRAL light
with a battery charger attached to the old battery I can get one set of the INDICATORS to work the other just stays on and it's pair does nothing (voltage reading at the dead indicator with the battery charger attached is 8.0v / the bulb is good)
bike idling ONLY NEUTRAL light works (no other electricals work)
stationary the battery holds 8.0v of its own
at idle the fluke shows only 1-1.2v at the battery
the stator has a 4 pin plug and one extra wire
stator plug is white / yellow / pink / red-green the single wire is black
readings are as follows (my fluke 77 has 0.2 internal resistance) OHMS
w-r/g 9.6
y-w 2.1
w-r/g continuity / 'beep' !
y-p continuity
b-w 95
b-r/g 104
b-y OL
b-p OL
b-w continuity
b-r/g continuity
should i be looking at pulling the stator or do i now need to check for a bad regulator or rectifier
thanks for your help and feel free to educate me in these matters, the wires always seem to get ahead of me
PS I think most of the readings are right but I may possibly have mixed some up !

Too much for me sorry, I still have mostly yamaha wiring spinning in my head. Did have a good handle on Honda back in the 70's as we sold both. Hope someone can help. Do you think the alternator isn't charging because it should make indicators flash or at least illuminate & horn beep etc. About all I can remember is green is earth & think pink is horn. Some bikes break the wires at the steering head from flexing but mostly yamaha smaller models. Do the lights run ok off the alternator or are they battery. If it's still 6 volt the lights I'd think must still be off the alternator through a regulator so only work with motor running. OK I'm lost lol. Had an xr350 r once bought as a basket case. Wish I'd kept it too.

RT thanks, glad you enjoyed the xr350r, these xl and xr's are a lot of fun (when they work ! ) I also checked the stator plug wires to ground and got
white to ground continuity
black to ground continuity
red/green to ground continuity
so methinks the stator is cooked (at first I just thought maybe the stator ground was a poor connection) (why its right next to the chain, dangerous location!)
I wanted to get a second third fourth opinion before having to shell out the 5000 yen for a new stator !
oh well making progress...

www.fruugo.co.nz/31120-kz1-951-generator...SqnijyxoCojEQAvD_BwE. I don't know enough about it but I guess being an alternator it shouldn't read to earth unless something going on I don't understand. My farm quad trx300 Honda there's something weird going on where one wire from the charging windings has to earth for the stator ignition winding in amongst those charging windings to work & spark. It's all magic haha.
