Ok, took the cable off the compression release, rechecked compression...I get about 90 PSI now...I also tried some starter fluid and the engine does start but dies soon after. So, the carburetor I rebuilt isn't apparently getting gas to the engine. So, I guess I need to remove the carburetor again and open it up. In my service manual, it really doesn't tell you where your needle settings need to be so what I did was figured out how many turns to close and then copied the number of turns. This didn't seem to help however. I'll check the bowl and see if there is any gas in it...

First, only a 5psi drop appears low. I tested mine 5 mins ago and got 85psi w/cable and 125psi with it disconnected.
That said, the real test to me is how it feels to my kick. After I start a bike 100 times before, I can usually tell what to expect from it. IE, the leg-o-meter.

Makes me wonder if your valve stuck open, leaking, etc. I still think it should run though on 85psi.
After done w/the test above, it fired right off w/the following settings on a VM30SS:
* air screw 1& 1/2 turns out
* needle on position 3

Forgot to mention. Is the choke choking or in this case "enriching" the mix? Maybe cover the end of the air inlet and try again. Will pull extra vacuum on all ports. Is the port clogged to the venturi from enrichment tube?
Lets say its firing every turn of the crank, but at which mm btdc? Can you describe how this was checked?

It's Alive!
Finally realized I had a choke and was able to get the bike started and running and it idles. Once I have it running for awhile, it starts right up! Thanks for all the help out there...sometimes, (at my age) I forget the simplest things...

I’d would’ve been tempted to simply turn it over using a drill motor on the flywheel nut. That way the kickstarter doesn’t actuate the compression release. But that’s just me. I’m kind of a hack for things like this.….

Never thought of that but that's a good idea! It seems though, when the drill stops suddenly, it could unscrew the nut for the flywheel...but it starts now with a kick!

Glad you got it running.
The drill motor thing has always worked when I needed it to. My flywheel nuts are tightened with a pneumatic impact and they don’t loosen with a drill motor. At least not yet…….

So, bike really hard to get started! So, I believe I need to check the timing seeing as I had the magneto off when I found it super rusty. I have the repair manual and have a dial indicator coming but the instructions for timing the bike are confusing to me. Are there any videos out there that might make this procedure understandable? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
