Thought about that after I posted. Could have been put on perfectly with no key and still fired at right or wrong time.

"The key was in but for some reason the magneto was not in far enough...you can tell now that where the nut is, some of the shaft sticks out beyond it, before, the shaft was inside the nut a bit...probably seated another 1/4" in..."

Key probably rocked upward on the inside, blocking the mag from going on fully. Glad it was easy to fix!
