JT1 clutch problems was created by sdbob
Hi all, I've been having problems with my clutch working at all. I finally noticed that my little ball is missing that's between the two push rods. I also see that I have about a 1/4" movement on my axle main side to side thru the bearing. Does anyone know if that movement is normal. That's for your help Bob

Not sure how you can tell the main axle is moving as is hidden behind a seal but wouldn't want too much of that with clutch hung on the other end. Sorry wake up me-' you're in at the clutch on the right and detect end movement. Not just basket play? But shaft movement?. If it's tightening to the bearing in the case then is the case bearing moving not fully retained. Need the ball in the pushrod though. Then should be able to view the clutch separate before putting the cover on. Lube the actuator & adjust up slack on the pushrod adjuster then on cable. But need a nice free cable too. Sorry on my phone so might be missing parts of story. Love jt1's & had about 4 over the years. Just looking on partzilla thinking the ball would be size 1/4 but I see 316 in the middle numbers so probably 3/16 but be same size as the pushrod so will be obvious.

Thanks RT for your insight. I can take that axle main and push it then pull it through the bearing. I can see it sliding through the middle of the bearing. I did remove the seal on opposite side to see if I could see anything there. Does that make any sense RT. Thanks for the help I really appreciate it. Bob

I guess ya push pulling the mainshaft without the cluch hub on so yes you will get movement but once its all bolted over against the bearing in the case you shouldn't get movement. No5 is retained by a circlip & revolves in a 4 speed like this but can't move sideways so all good.
Only mentioned No5 as in a 5 speed trans the end gear is small & pressed on very tight. But none of that is helpful sorry.

providing the bearing retainer plate No8 isn't bowed out--then nothing should move sideways, not to be confused with a little clutch basket free play needed to revolve when in gear with the clutch pulled in--as in seperated--as happens during gear changing also. Sorry i'm woffling on.

Thanks RT, i'll put that ball in with a new worm drive and put it all back together and see how it works. Hopefully I just over reacted seeing that movement in axle. thanks for all the help. Bob
