"What I'm getting at is: does anybody glue theirs down, or "No, you don't need to glue it down"?"

Sorry if I misunderstood.

If the original spikes, clips etc are intact, and you have the same, or equivalent, components supplied with the original seat and cover, then gluing shouldn't be necessary. However, if these parts ae damaged and/or missing (rusted away, snapped off), then gluing is a way around this and is what some folks have done.

I misunderstood as well Alan.

Trailboss, since I had bought all new components - seat frame, foam and cover everything was new and intact, gluing just didn't make sense to me.

I think the question was about gluing the foam to the pan? (before installing the cover)

In that case I totally misunderstood the question!

From old, original seats I've seen and stripped, foam might have been tacked to the base in a few places.

That's what I'm thinking too Mark, I just didn't/don't see the need to glue it down making it semi permanent and if I ever had to take it apart for whatever reason it would just be a mess trying to get the foam off the seat pan.

On the older bikes, I agree with Gr8uncleal...  it sometimes appears that the foam was maybe "tack glued" to the pan?  But the original pan and foam are usually not in great shape so hard to tell.

On a couple of later monoshock bikes I've done (cover stapled to plastic seat pan), the foam was glued to the pan.  But these bikes are so old I can't be sure factory did it or maybe someone had replaced a cover previously.

I didn't glue the two JT seats that I got thru KDI, but I did glue the foam on my Seatconcepts kit that I got for my SCR950 only because that's what their instructions said to do.

I am a retired corporate jet upholsterer and the Yamaha seats that I have taken apart never have the foam adhered to the seat pan. I think the OP's question is, should you glue the cover to the top of the foam. This sometimes needs to be done if there is concave curvature to the foam where you sit. Gluing this down will aid in the cover to assimilate the shape of the seat.
When I design a seat whether it's stock looking or custom, I do not need a pull cord as I custom fit the band of the cover to the seat and foam.

The newer seats are plastic so you can staple the cover to the base as shown in post #40.

I put a softer seat foam for my new Tenere (our old DT's are more comfortable than the new bikes), and found that the factory seat foam was not glued.

Actually my question was do I glue the seat cover down on the underside where the clips are to keep the cover from curling up like in the picture I posted (see post #7), but have since found out that pulling the cord takes care of that.  I'm just too lazy now to take the seat back off to do that but will get around to it before it's ready for registration and the road...
