Need a 72 DT2 ignition coil was created by Hockins

Does anyone know of an ignition coil substitute for a 72 DT2?  The original part (308-82310-41-00) is unavailable from the usual sources.   Saw one on e-bay for $180 but I'm looking for a less expensive, workable alternative.

Is there a different ignition coil that will work on a 72 DT2?

Why do you think you need a new coil?

Another pitfall is that Yamaha literature is sometimes total crap when it comes to specs.

In theory--my theory--any single wire ac coil will work, but easier if you find one that mounts straight on--like this one. Also 'as Mark asked' why do you need a coil--as often it's something else much less expensive like giving the points a scratch. Apologies if i'm getting ahead of things especially if all under control.

Thanks for the post.  Just to be sure, you're saying this coil will work on a 72 DT-2?

Well, i mix n match all sorts. But if you bring up a pic of your 308 part number & view the link i posted, they look the same mounting, are single wire & down in the link it shows for magneto models i can see there plus a few cdi models like DT360A etc. If it doesn't spark then it won't be a fault of the coil. But 'do' need to be sure that your coil is faulty--which i guess isn't easy to be sure of. So cost of this one isn't exorbitant to try at least. Coil being single wire type it earths through the mount. Frame mount area should be clean steel but i've never had a problem. Screws are into steel threads so would be unlikely 'not' to earth when screwed up tight. See what others like MarkT says.

Did you check your plug cap there is a resistor inside?

+1 on checking the plug and cap. For my dads bike he had a NGK resistor plug and resistor cap. I put a non resistor plug in (champion I believe) and he had spark. His coil was cut and spliced by someone else trying to get it to run so I did end up replacing the coil. I went with the following Emgo one and so far it has been fine.

Hey! I have recently come out of the tunnel of DT ignition issues, and to my knowledge a number of aftermarket ignition coils work just fine. I had it at a bike shop and the guy bought two chinese coils and after some testing they both work just as the original, corroborating what RT was saying. Mine's a DT3 but I believe the ignition systems are nearly identical, if not completely. Good luck!
