Newbie Buying a Old DT was created by mx360guy
Newbie,
Picking this bike up this Friday? I think it is a '73.
I want to make a fun desert bike out of it with a mellow motor. Old guy now.
Can I fit '73 MX360 front and rear ends on this frame?
Thanks

Frame and engine numbers would have been the same when the bike was new and you can check these in the VIN table in the Tech Library - see top toolbar.
Others will chime in on the MX components.

Just by looking I agree either a 72 or 73...they are virtually identical. VIN will tell for sure. Just post it up here and I or someone will confirm.

Thanks for the reply, looking at the tech library and not knowing the VIN. If the wheels are correct this would be a '73. It appears to have a 21" front wheel. My MX360 donor bike has very nice front and rear components that I hope will fit on this frame. The 360 motor is way too much for me. It's a beast and I am shot after 20 minutes. I can't do it justice. I have a nice yellow desert tank ready. I want to put on Preston Petty fenders, mud flap and tear around the Mojave desert on her. Actual use all of the gears!

MX360 is different bike completely, motor & all. But forks will drop in ok. I think the swinging arm might be shorter on the MX as the MX motor is longer & wheel base about the same so something had to be shorter, so defeating the purpose to swap that end. Measure it will soon tell. MX rear trick original shocks should swap if long enough. Don't often see those reservoir shocks still usable.

That looks like a non reed intake which makes the motor a 71 doesn't it. The pic looks that way but maybe not

I think you are right about that. I do see bolts mounting the carb on to the engine.
Is that a make it reedless?

Good to know about the swing arms. I really wanted to have the MX arm because of the chain tensioner. I just like that support of the chain in choppy conditions. But if it is shorter than that won't work .
I will check it all out by tomorrow afternoon and report. I have Works performance shocks on the MX.
Thanks very much for the comments!

1972 and 1973 reed valve bikes had the carb fitted with bolts. However, a good spot that no reed valve there.
Unless it's been completely painted over or ground away, the frame (VIN) number should be stamped into the headstock. Not sure if the 250 was right or left, but it should be there and will start DT1, whichever model it is. If it starts RT1, then someone has fitted a 250 motor (the motor is a 250?) into a 360 frame - pretty sure both frames are the same.

Ok, now i expand up the pics i see it's a DT1--if not RT1, but bigger fins on the 360 which also has a decomp valve in the front.
