I want to convert a 1975 Yamaha Enduro 175B to a modern ignition system.

My Googling skills are terrible with older dirt bike stuff and I cannot seem to find a modern, clear answer to this question. I have a '75 Enduro 175 with a point and condenser and a timing advanced (centrifugal) flywheel. Can I convert it to a more modern ignition system? Thank you !

Too many variations on a short run model to make this a viable kit to make for us. I believe there's three if not four different generators used on the 175 round the world.

Measure the diameter of your ignition backing plate. I believe this may be what you’re looking for. Formerly Powerdynamo. Check with MarkT as he has a lot of experiences with these and the smaller bikes.

Stator is 120mm on the US DT175 from 1974 to 1981... and probably decades longer in other countries.

Powedynamo/VAPE is a complete modern system with plenty of 12 volt lighting wattage.

That said, the Yamaha Energy-Transfer points magneto is a solid reliable ignition system with a strong spark... basically it's functionally equivalent to a CDI without the "black box"... in other words a "mechanical CDI".

As far as the 175 advance mechanism used on some models, it's only active for starting. At idle speed, it's already fully advanced. If it's messed up, just lock it fully advanced and you'll never know the difference.

Other than that, you mentioned "dirt bike"... does that mean high output 12v lighting is not important? Do you just want a bare bones CDI ignition?

There are lots of CDI options from other years/models that will work if you're looking for something used/cheaper... especially if you're not worried about lights.

Powerdynamo is a great brand new option for just a "dirt bike" or if you want to convert to 12v lighting.

So what's your goal and what do you want to do as far a lighting?

P.S. DT175 was actually the "longest production run" Enduro made by Yamaha.. sharing many parts over a very long history.... DT175 production continued decades after the DT250 and DT400 were long gone. The best reason not to make a "kit" is that the original ignition, points or the later CDI, are solid systems that rarely "need" replacing... unlike the extremely problematic DT360-DT400 systems used from 1974-76.

They never seemed that popular over here as they fell foul of the licencing rules. Why have a 175 when you were allowed a 250?
We see two main models, both with CDi and the occasional points model. All three have different generators. Our TY kit fits one model I believe, but that is set for a trials riding and won't be great on a DT. We'd need to do a different CDi and maybe re set the timing. But to date we just haven't seen many of that see that model here.

Maybe people will start dusting them off now!

All this stuff is getting old now and the CDi windings break down - we get lots of the 175 CDi systems in for rewind.

Yup I get that, some of the 100cc bikes were certainly as fast as 125s but everyone wanted a 125.
