1980 DT175 oil leak was created by bo.burrell

Hey guys! My 1980 DT175 has sat for a few months and when I moved it while cleaning my garage it started dripping oil. It has normally dripped a little oil(not enough that it bugged me) now it is dripping to a point there is a puddle. I cant quite figure out where its dripping from, any ideas? Ill get some pictures uploaded hopefully sometime this week. Thanks!

Is it two stroke or gearbox oil that you are finding?

Two stroke can sometimes leak from the overflow.

You know what it might be 2cycle. How would I prevent leak from the overflow?

Straighten up the side stand so it's more vertical could help, plus don't fill it so full. Otherwise it could be the gearchange seal or even more unlikely the front sprocket but is loose letting oil out under the spacer, but that seal is above the oil level but then again it depends how far it's leaning on the side stand Catch some oil & see if it looks like the oil tank oil if that's a distinguishable color.

Since it started leaking more when moved my money is on full oil tank and when you moved it caused to spill out the overflow. Hope that's it....easy fix....just don't fill it so full. Good luck!

I have seen many times over the years--people fill the trans up until they can't get anymore in. Probably wouldn't come out the trans breather though unless it was running & forcing it out.

The 1980 175 has the tank breather routed way up under the gas tank... not too likely it's coming from there... at least not as likely as on older bikes.

Could be a pinhole in the hose to the pump or a leaking pump filling the pump cavity... not uncommon if it's been sitting a long, long time is pump has filled the crankcase and oil is leaking out the exhaust junction.

Shift shaft seals sometimes leak on those too...

It's hard to see leaks on the black engine... sometimes dusting the suspected areas with a light coat of baby powder will help show the leak... powder sticks to oil.
