was fighting timing as some div hadnt tightened up the stator plate so it was moving
.. honestly
thaks for the timing advance info
yes holding it open ( a carb float pin seems to be the right size)

Sounds ok now so far as ignition electrical goes.
Stator plate loose could sure cause erratic spark.
Lucky to come out of that without damage.
Look forward to next update.

I'd leave the carb alone for now....def an ignition miss, try running it in a dark garage (door open of course ) preferably with the tank off (using an aux fuel bottle if avail) so you can see the coil and associated wiring..... while running, look and see through the spinning flywheel for excessive arcing at the points...could be a condenser if so. Also check or just disconnect the right side kill switch to be sure.
You'll find it , hang in there.

Nothing makes me smile like the smell of Blendzall green label

ok
i "think" i found the issue
i gave the spark advance cam whatnot shaft in the flywheel some lithium grease and timing seems bob on now, i think it was holding open in advance & was echoing issues i had right at the start of the troubles, idles fine but no power and wouldnt rev out, occasional scary kickback
its idleing well and revving out

seem to have an issue with gear selection now that i am hoping is clutch adjustment, gears going back together seemed failry straight forward, not much to get wrong?
i could be kidding myself on tht matter
