76 DT400 flywheel nut was created by AirborneSilva

Realistically how much torque can I put on the flywheel nut?  according to the manual it says 650 inch lbs (53.33 ft. lbs), but how much further can I safely go?  Due to a bonehead mistake I made my Vape flywheel spun on the crank so it wont stay in time.  I've lapped the flywheel and crank to remove any burs that it had but now I want to try and keep it from spinning.  Thanks for helping a brother out, hopefully I can get this going, again! Would 65 lbs be too much?

I'm not an expert on this at all, but when I put my flywheel on, I just hung on to the flywheel with my hand and torqued down the nut with a cordless impact driver. I put a thin piece of tape on the socket so I could see how much it was moving, and just used my own judgment. A few months later when I had the cover off, I torqued it down a little bit more just to be safe.

I basically did the same thing on the other side with the clutch basket nut, and primary gear nut.

But again, I'm no expert on this... but I did stay at a Holiday Inn once.

I wonder if a tiny bit of locktite on just the maiting surfaces (not threads) and using the proper torque would work? I would not want to strip or deform the crank threads.

Thanks Tom, you're a brave man but in my case what's the worst that can happen, I guess if I stripped it I'd need a new crank.  Although your method has me worried since you didn't stay in a Holiday Inn Express

Wish I would have thought of that (or you mentioned it earlier), I fought the timing for the better part of three hours yesterday.  Every time I it on my 2.9 BTDC it would move when I tried to tighten it down.  I finally got it close, a little less than 2.9 so I'll see how it runs at that, if it will run at all.

I'll win the prize for the roughest mechanic--well hell we're technicians nowdays!!. All my 360 cranks have been previously spun by others, [some look spun a few times] & made a mess. Couldn't do much except make them look best as i could. But i do them up super tight although i don't use a torque wrench i'm sorry to say. My pic, albeit years ago, is still how i do it.  Actually looking at that handle i would have had a pushbike seat tube as an extension on that for more leverage. Or likely a YG1 Landscout fork leg lol--true i tell ya. Luck maybe but never pulled the thread off the crank. Also i've never had one slip & take the crank key out & as i said, all my tapers are damaged. I 'did' run a TT250 with no key playing with more advance & never slipped, but was a perfect taper. Same with an IT200 using a pirate flywheel & needed to run without key to get the timing right--& all good. So--don't be afraid to tighten it super tight. I hope its not slipping during your tightening process. I've run out of ideas now.

Thanks for the replies, guess I'll give it some more torque and see what happens.  The timing did slip a little when I got it to the point it's at now so it's a bit below the 2.9 but not over so I believe it should run and what a gigantic exercise in frustration and patience that was!  I didn't think about resting the holder (for a lack of better words), on the foot peg so maybe that would have made a difference instead of holding it with my left while I torqued it with my right, I'm sure that would have helped.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but how can it spin when there is a key on the crank?

Or are you saying the nut came loose allowing the flywheel to move off the key?

I always just do flywheel nuts up as tight as I can and dont bother with a torque wrench - never had one come off yet.
