Sorry I thought I mentioned that I have a Vape ignition 12v conversion on my DT400, the flywheel doesn't use a key.

One thing about the way I use a cordless impact wrench is that I wasn't holding the flywheel with a tool, just with my hand. I honestly don't think I could strip either than nut or the crankshaft that way. If I was using a flywheel holder braced against the peg, that might be a different issue. Also by putting a piece of tape on the socket I can see when the nut has turned about 1/8 turn or so, and stop there.

I'm not familiar with the Vape system, and didn't realize it doesn't have a key. That must be very difficult to try to tighten the flywheel while maintaining it at a certain position!

That's an understatement and the only thing I don't like about the Vape system, other than that it was pretty easy to install, but had to ask a question about one portion of wiring I wasn't sure of, and yeah holding the flywheel from moving while tightening isn't easy.  I spent quite a while yesterday, probably close to 3 hours, trying to get it.

No worries Andy, I really wish it did have a key then it would be a perfect kit!

The original yamaha mag crank nut is quite long so not easily stripped. I wonder if it is high tensile steel like the crank would be--if there's such a thing as high tensile nuts!!. I remember at work we used to have a supplier come around & top up the nuts & bolts then oneday a new lot all gave in & stripped before sufficiently tight. Were very low quality. Talking mainly 6 & 8mm. Was a damn pain. I save all the bolts & nuts out of anything that looks good, like my old Honda car i wrecked & alll the bolts had Either a honda sign or something that meant 10 on the tensile scale as far as i know & you could feel the difference, just gave you confidence tightening nuts & bolts. Umm-& that had very little to do with the post sorry.

Keys are for indexing only.
They provide 5% of the resistance to spin the flywheel.

RT325 - that gave me a bit more confidence to go ahead and put the cordless impact gun on it like Tom P does, with the tape for reference.

Good to know but 5% could have made all the difference, speaking from a non-expert person.

I've mostly only used a rattle gun to undo the nut. I might've used one on a smaller motor to tighten the flywheel nut but not on a 250 or 360. I hear there's some very powerful battery inpact wrenches around these days. Would be interesting to do it up with that if it has a stated torque, then compare where you're at with a manual torque wrench & see if they're close. Trouble is, 'i think'--it's hard to be acurate without backing it off a little with a socket & bar then come up again with the manual torque wrench & see if it goes further around on the nut. Probably just me--& my strange ideas lol.
