Chain free play was created by dogman

From the manual:

"After reconnecting the chain adjust the free play to 25mm. (1 in.) up and down at the center of the lower section with the rear wheel on the ground."

Does this mean 1" up AND 1" down? Or 1" total free play? 1" seems pretty tight.

1" total.  Loose chains wear out sprockets.
