Thanks MarkT for reminding me about that posting. Read it a few weeks ago but didn't realize I was looking at the wrong mark. Now it will help.

You guys told me to check 4 things to get this bike running well after I fried the piston.
Air leaks - yep I fixed 2
Carb - cleaned, checked jet sizes and readjusted
Timing - checked and awaiting tools
Exhaust - cleaned and knocked out a pile of ashes

This thing is now running great! Rode it about 30 miles today and filled it up with ethanol free gas.

I'll try to post a video of the bike running. It sounds throatier (?) after I've cleaned the soot out of the muffler.
And I installed new mirrors

And made a tool pack out of an old fanny pack by placing grommets on the edge of the straps and bolting it onto the frame.

Hi Blackwidow.....353 is a nice a cool head temp. That says your bike is jetted rich which is nice and safe. I have been using a head temp gauge for a couple of years now on several sized bikes....mostly 175 thru 400's so I have quite abit of experience.

I consider 420 degrees to be the start of the red zone for head temps.....our bikes can tolerate head temps as high as 480 to even 500 degrees without holing the piston, but that is very dicey. But 420 is a good max temp target IMHO..

Based on my experience I will jet a bike for highway riding so that when I really push the bike hard especially on a long uphill grade the head temp will go above 400 degrees but not go much over about 420. That will give you optimal power and still have plenty of safety margin... There is nothing wrong with keeping your jetting on the rich side although you will have less power and higher fuel consumption...

Again great work on your bike and way to stick with it getting your issues resolved.....
Looks like there are lots of fun miles ahead for you on your DT400 ! Also think about going up 1 tooth on the countershaft if you will be doing quite abit of road riding.....it will give your bike a better road feel with the taller gearing. :Throttle

sounds like your bike is running great BlackWidow!

353 is a good safe temp, it is a little on the rich side but this is a good thing!
