I mean, I've owned the bike for .. 17 years now? It's the only bike in my inventory that needs more than a carb clean to get going if I forget to winterize the bike. It's the only bike where the ignition might be the problem, as long as it "has" spark. It's definitely less reliable than the .. thirty other ignition systems I've dealt with? Well, that's not quite right. My GS400, and GS425 both had points, and both needed cleaning and resetting at some point. But those were a lot easier to deal with, as I didn't have to fight through the flywheel.

What's your idea of acceptable levels of ignition system maintenance? Not being silly here in the least. Every year? Every six months? Where do you draw the line at "I need to break out some 2000 grit and a feeler guage".

I get it.  You don't like points.  I'm not at all trying to convince you that you shouldn't pursue an electronic ignition for your LT2!  (And I'm sure nobody else here is either)  Like I said, I'm sure many are interested in what you might come up with.

(Borrowing a quote from RT325, I rarely have to "give the points a scratch"...  it's been at least 10 years since I've had to clean points to get spark on one of my dozens of points magneto bikes.  When I do, it's a easy 10 minute job max with no feeler gauges or "dwell setting" involved.)

... Parts have been ordered. I think.. this might cost less than $40.

So, that seems real interesting.  Why do "I" need to touch the ignition so often, when you're going a decade?  I wonder what the difference is.

I’m definitely not against electronic ignition I have a pertronix on my 69 Mustang for over 30 years with no problems If you decide to stay with points get good quality points genuine Yamaha or Daikhi not cheap Chinese junk

“Why not points” seems like an interesting and friendly question to me.  I have 6 Yamahas and some are Cdi and other points, and personally I like the points best.

Right. So here's where we're at.

I've ordered parts to make an ignition system. I have also ordred the parts from NZ. So.. $300 later? I'm going to have two solutions. We're going to have two solutions from this thread, I think.

Nerobro.  Your response to HT1 was uncalled for.

You may not have intended it to, but your retort comes across as rude and arrogant.  Sometimes a question requires other questions to get to the bottom of the problem and HT1 was giving his time and effort to help you.

Someone out there will have the answer you seek and your response will not encourage them to step forward.
