250 definitely runs way smoother than my 360 and 400 and it has no issue hauling my 240 up a mountain.

Let us know what bike you decide to use. I have a very nice Yamaha factory desert tank ( yellow plastic) for sale. Good luck on your trip. Planning ahead is very wise.

I grew up in NW Arkansas.

Curious as to why you excluded the DT1 and RT1 from your list?

I understand that the reed valve engines are much better adapted to altitude changes, such as the high Colorado passes.  May be B.S. but there seems to be more of them available.

I found a RT3 in Memphis that was pretty much what I was looking for. Thanks to everyone for the input. I'm sure I'll have more questions.

Picked it up Monday.  It was actually nicer than I expected.  Even had the original tool kit.  Starts eagerly and runs perfectly.  50 year old tires show almostt no weathering.  Seat pan and cover are great.  It looks a bit rough but I wasn't looking for a perfect bike.

No, that wasn't the guy's name.  He was in Bartlett.
