250 or 360? was created by donniejoe
UPDATE: I found a RT3 in Memphis that was pretty much what I was looking for. Thanks to everyone for the input. I'm sure I'll have more questions.
Which bike would you choose?
DT2, DT3, RT2 or RT3
I'm planning a TAT adventure and I want to ride a vintage Enduro. (anyone can ride it on a KTM 690 Enduro) I want my bike to be at least 50 years old, so the more modern 70's enduros, including the 400's are out. I'll be 64 years old, currently 260 pounds and 6'0" tall. I will include a physical training regimen to my preparations and I should lose some weight. I have no major health issues and I'm retired, so there's no reason for me to be in a hurry. I will not be camping, so my gear will not be too heavy. Given the range of these bikes, I'll need to be able to carry additional fuel. I will not be using the bike's electrical system to charge any devices. The 360 obviously has more power but the 250 doesn't kick like a mule and I believe they're a little bit more reliable. Reliability is probably the most important consideration, with negotiating the Colorado high mountain passes being the most challenging sections. I live near the TAT route in western Arkansas which is nearly the halfway point. I plan to stop at home, do some maintenance and rest up a while. If this adventure proves to be too much for the bike I'll switch to something modern and finish it.

Arkansas is a great state I go to Hot Springs all the time been going since the 60’s that’s where I’m going to go when I retire I think a 250 would be better in the long haul

Sounds awesome!
There's a whole adventure thread on here about several members that did the TAT with Vintage Yamahas years ago... lots of info and pictures on their trip, bike mods, extra fuel capacity added, etc. if you search. I think they were all 360/400's if i remember correctly.

Here is a link to one of maybe the last leg of the TAT trips... I think they ran pretty much the whole thing in a couple of trips.

250 is my choice. Easy starting & smoother running. Just be sure the flywheel nut is super tight as often can be a problem for the unwary & perhaps not knowing who tightened it last--they eat crank keys for breakfast if not fully tightened. Welcome from NZ.

I would love to do the TAT but not too sure I'd want to do it on my DT2, probably would rather on my DT400.
A side note, my oldest son lives in Hot Springs village, nice area and wouldn't mind moving there if it wasn't for the darn cold winters!

Unless you’re your RT325 (Morley) who can kick over and ride any big bore bike that’s one reason why I said a 250. Tony I’m sure your son really likes the village awesome place too. I had a house on Lake Hamilton but sold it because somebody offered crazy money so I’ll find another one in a few years when I retire when you visit your son maybe we can hook up in the near future

250 because they run smoother.

That'd be cool to get together, not sure when I'll be visiting him though. Was there last June for the first time, my brother and I stayed in a hotel there in the village. Didn't know people went there for crystals, pretty cool...
