1970 ct1 headlight replacement was created by Knowlesshawn88

Looking for help with anyone who has done this. I had always managed on my older bikes to complete the restos and find original oem sealed headlights unfortunately neither I or my friend could find one so he purchased one from a gentlemen on ebay with the username pobit the headlight looks amazingly unfortunately I'm a bit confused on mounting it in the original ring it came with 3 spring clips and no instructions has anyone ever done this or purchased from this seller and have a copy of the original install instructions it's the last thing to get it out the door and while I love the bike its definitely tossed me some curve balls along the way lol.

I've done several...  hard to explain in words.  Let me see if I can take a picture of one clipped into the rim.

If it helps, here's my RD125 headlight with clips fitted. Not unlike greenhouse glass fitments!

Yes, Alan has posted a good picture.   Thank you Alan!

My preference on headlights is to buy clips (Yamaha sells them for later models, or someplace like MIkesXS) and use a 5 3/4" H4 lens/reflector with a 6v 25w or 35w H4 bulb (depending on model).  Easier/cheaper to replace the bulb than a sealed beam.

Knowlesshawn88, if you get some spare time, have a search through the forum for various ways that other members have repaired those sealed beams.

They all start the same way, so I can help with that! Peel back those retaining tabs, remove the metal ring and rubber seat and then break the glass of the bulb to remove it from the lens. Clean out the shards of glass from the lens.

Different members have used different types of replacement bulb, and therefore different methods to fit them. I won't comment on these, as I haven't tried them myself (yet!).

When you search the forum, don't limit your search to CT1, as the replacements were done on DTs, RTs etc.

What they don't show you is the horrible beam pattern that inevitably results...  jamming a new bulb in an original sealed beam might make light but it's not usable or practical for night riding.  I'm speaking from experience.

A headlight reflector and bulb looks simple but the bulb filaments have to be located precisely in relationship to the reflector to focus the light and work properly.

If you do try to replace the internal bulb, try to get the filament to be approximately the same distance in so it will give a close to the stock pattern. The reflector is designed that way.

Here is a link to a bulb that might do the trick: amzn.to/3sZxEHV

Here is an alternative source that stocks the proper socket to plug such a bulb in as the one in your bike would not work. dratv.com/noname22.html

Just curious. Has anyone ever tried replacing the headlights mentioned with the original 1969 AT-1E headlight system? It is a replaceable bulb system just like you all are talking about. And it's 12 volt.

If you can find one (I recall them being less available and more expensive) then it should fit the headlight shell. The early AT and CT’s used a smaller headlight shell than the 250/360 series.
