RIP.  I had the pleasure of speaking to Mr. Sieman a few years ago, he was one of my childhood heros with his irreverent, often comedic, "tell it like it is" writing style.

He sent me a copy of his book "Monkey Butt".  Worth a read for anyone that remembers the early 1970's motocross magazines.

Yes, I believe he was the inventor of the Mr. Know-it-all column?  I think it was Vic Krause that took it over when Mr. Sieman left Dirt Bike for Modern Cycle after Honda threatened to pull all their advertising from Dirt Bike because of an "honest opinion" review of the new XL175.

He had a lot of integrity.  These days magazines almost never have anything negative to say about anything...  With Mr. Sieman at the helm, Dirt Bike called a turd a turd.

I could be wrong about the above...  just my recollection, too tired to check.

Very sad news. He had a huge effect on my enthusiasm for getting into dirt bikes when I was a kid. I could hardly wait for each issue of DB. Rick's no nonsense but humorous writing style was always a pleasure.

He wrote a short story in DB that always stuck with me, all these years. "The Last Ride" . . .

Thanks Rick.  Godspeed.

I went to high school in Parker, AZ. I walked to the local magazine stand (hard to imagine such a place existed) every month to buy the latest issue of Dirt Bike. I used all the buzz words; WFO, mung & drool and foo foo parts as often as possible. Someone above (Mark?) mentioned the Honda issue with Dirt Bikes' reviews of their off road bikes. One was a review of one the the early XLs with a pig pictured next the the bike with an oink in a text balloon, of course Dirt Bike magazine was right.

I bought my first DT1 in 1971 knowing that it was not an ideal MX bike but that was all I could afford. BUT thanks to Dirt Bikes guidance I almost immediately cut my frame in half and lowered it with a kit advertized in the magazine. I remember my Dad walking into the farm shop where I lived (he ran the farm) and seeing me with my almost new motorcycle cut in half, shaking his head and walking out. I did the welding and it actually worked. I followed lots of Dirt Bike/Super Hunky's tricks and did lots of stupid things I probably would not have tried other than them saying to do it. I actually had a positive affect on my life, I tried lots of things I probably should not have tried.

I agree with Mark on Monkey Butt, one of the funniest books I have ever read.

RIP Rick Sieman. BTW his daughter Cindy is posting a lot of his best articles on Facebook.
