On an analogue meter, there is usually a knob to adjust so that zero ohms is shown when the two wires/terminals of the meter are touched together. This will usually need doing when switching between using X1, X10, X100 etc etc.

Edit - photo of my meter shown below and you can see the ohms adjuster knob just below the dial, top right.

Congratulations on the success!

(And yes, analog meters must be zeroed, what you're describing is the behavior of a meter that was not zeroed... sometimes there is a thumbwheel on the side of the meter to zero, can be hard to see.)
