Yes I learned about that thin washer / shim when I first opened up my CT1B. Took me a while to figure out where it belonged.

Schu, don't worry about using these aftermarket friction plates and springs. I just went for a longer ride and I couldn't even make them slip. Cleaning the steels made all the difference. Back when I initially installed them, I didn't even think to do it, and was learning as I went working on the bike. BTW, 2,000 miles later, and these friction plates and springs still measure to spec.

Good to know. I’m hoping to get that one on the lift this weekend. My 175C is currently on the lift waiting for a new rubber boot between the carb and the air box which should be delivered in the next day or two.

Hey Tom. I bought the exact same friction plates and springs as you did. The springs free length is to spec, but the frictions measure 3.5mm and my old ones measure 3.8 ish. The manual says new should be 4mm.
The total pack with new frictions measures 35.2mm and my total stack with old frictions measures 37.5mm so I am hesitant to use these new ones. When fully assembled with the new ones it ends up with the plates loose in the basket. I can pinch the stack and move it in/out a couple mm. Took it all apart and reassembled with the old ones and they assemble tight.
I didn’t soaked the new plates…. So I will soak them overnight, but I doubt they will swell that extra 0.5mm. I welcome any suggestions or recommendations. I had hoped to button it up tomorrow.

Schu- CT1 needs 4mm frictions.
Your 76 175 probably uses 3mm, 1975 and earlier 4mm.

On my CT2 I put about 1500 miles with no complaints on a cheapo set of frictions from ebay that run $15-20, they are still going just fine, have not had to adjust the cable or anything since installing.

Cheapos can work fine if they are the correct thickness.

That's not right. Mine measured mostly 3.90 to 3.96 when new and dry, and are still about the same. In fact my old ones are still all around 3.7 to 3.8+. I wonder if they goofed on packing, or shipped the wrong ones? BTW if your old ones measure 3.8mm, your bike must take 4mm.
The ad lists them at 4mm
