VIN was created by Nosdog1

Good afternoon. I am attempting to file for loss title on a 1974 Yamaha DT360 and the code/VIN on the headstock and engine are matching 9 digit numbers, but for some reason it's not enough. It's a DT360A. Is there somewhere to call with just the nine digit number? Thank you for your assistance. Erick.

We need more information, like what state.

I live in San Diego, CA and just submitted all my paperwork to the DMV through a registration service shop. Everything checked out with the 9 digit setup. Scheduled a CHP inspection for December too. No one voiced quarrels with the vin.

Some DMV's add a bunch of zeros at the beginning or end of short vin numbers.

17 digit VIN's did not become law in the USA until 1981.

You might need to find someone at the DMV that knows the rules.

Are you in California. I recently went through this, first step go to DMV, they get it started in the system. Then you make appointment with the CHP for a Vin and engine number check. If it’s clean they give you paperwork to take back to the DMV. Be forewarned, the CHP records go way back, so bad things may show up. A friend took his Honda CB750 to CHP, they found the motor was stolen back in the 80’s. They impounded the bike. The CHP did search’s from previous owners and insurance company but the results were a dead end. He got the bike back and was able to register.
One of my bikes I went to the local police station and told them I was buying a bike, I had already bought it, and asked them to run a vin for stolen.

Hope this helps. Good luck.
