Please help, I don't know if I should be scared away from this bike by the fact that it doesn't have the right exhaust. Will it be a big problem to get a decent exhaust pipe from another source? Sourcing a pipe seems really hard, especially with the original trim piece. Once I buy one bike, I don't have the cash to sink into more just to pull parts off of them. I am almost wishing I saved the pipe off my AT3 now because I know it fits...

For lists of parts that were originally and officially shared between models, then here Partzilla and CMSNL are your friends.

Both sites are fairly user friendly and you can just sort of "follow your nose". Once you have selected a part to look at, scroll down a little and both sites show which other bikes shared that part. A couple of caveats:-

1) Info shown is based on the parts lists held on their databases. Not really a problem you for you chaps in the US, as they have a fairly comprehensive library of parts lists for US models. Not so good for us in the rest of the world, as they don't hold many lists for our models! :Boo Hoo
2) They won't show a shared part where the paint colour is different, even though it will physically fit - eg petrol tank, oil tank, side panel etc.

Fleabay and images from the internet in general are very useful for research.

The earlier pipe fits the later CT... rear mount is at the shock on the earlier models instead of under the seat. Functionally works fine.

For some reason it's a whole lot easier to find a decent pipe and shield for the 69-71 than the 72-73. They are out there though... just have to be patient.

Thanks guys. I've been looking on Partzilla for a while, that's how I got as far as I did with realizing what parts were compatible. I didn't know the 69-71 pipes actually fit though. Obviously I saw it in the photos of the CT2, just didn't know it wouldn't work horribly. I've only found one complete pipe so far, but I would have to get the guy to sell it off the parts bike it is on... That would be the only way for me to get the guard with the 175 on it I bet. Waiting for CT2/3s to appear is difficult because I see them almost as infrequently as RTs. DT and AT models seem more common (especially in parts bike condition).

Also I've found a couple terrible condition exhausts on ebay and even a nice one which just needs one dent removed by the torch and air compressor method. However, none of them actually have the heat guard, and that cannot be bought separately it seems, so waiting ages for the parts bike to come around seems to be the only way. As long as I can enjoy the bike without the original pipe, it's fine though. I will just use it as buying leverage hopefully. The only issue it seems to have from pictures is that it looks like the correct CT2 pipe sits closer to the bike, so it might be a burn risk with the wrong one.

Can you get a better picture of how the rear of the pipe is mounted?

Looks like someone mickey-moused it? Shouldn't stick out like that.

No I don't have any other pictures, sorry Mark. Don't know what you mean by mickey-moused it. Yeah it sticks out weird for sure... Something's up. I am on to another deal simultaneously... The best one yet but not at a good price. I have some level of confidence they will be willing to compromise though. The ad's stale, they just want something else to ride, and they weren't selling at all but intending to trade so the price may be purposefully set high.

Either way, such a beautifully unmolested badge-bike is probably worth a ridiculous price... I just couldn't pay it if I wanted to :Ugh

Not sure yet if that's paint fade or just dust. Willing to pay up to $1750 or so for this one, even though that requires spending a lot of the money I put away that wasn't supposed to be touched. I think it is worth far more to be honest. Even if the paint is super faded, I think it would be worth it.

What do you guys think?? Worth the money??

Mickey-moused = substandard poor job.

Like holding the pipe on with baling wire on top of the acorn shock nut instead of using the proper shock stud meant to mount the pipe.

Is that a 69 250? Looks like faded and signs of corrosion on aluminum? Both signs of being stored outside in the elements for some period of time. Not necessarily a deal breaker but could make it worth a lot less than whatever they are asking.

No way to tell at all without more details and pictures.

Could be one of those "money talks" deals too... where you MUST GO SEE IT WITH CASH IN HAND. It's not unheard of to offer half or less than the asking price and have the seller take it on the spot. You just never know.

Gonna try that. I think I'll try to gauge how much they are trying to get out of it before I go for it. If it seems like I can lowball in person, I'll go for it. Much better to lowball in person, especially when you can figure out all of the little problems there and base the offer on that...

Not sure of the year. They said it was stored under a tarp in a shed. What this person wants out of the deal is a dualsport (or hopefully the money to buy one), so I hope they think whatever I offer is enough to get them what they want. I don't think it'd be a hard deal honestly, since their price is mostly dependent on being able to get something else. This bike seems unusually original, almost as if people haven't gotten down to removing and modifying stuff on it. That's what makes it attractive to me... Plus it has a perfect tank and oil tank.

Would never go somewhere without cash in hand.
