Crankshaft shim? was created by Jack
The service manual for the DT 360 mentions installing the right side shim on the crankshaft as the first step in reassembly. Either my engine didn't have this or if it did I managed to loose it somewhere along the way. I've checked the Yamaha parts list for that engine, the shopyamaha parts list, CMS, and Partzilla, none of them show or list it. Is it even a real and necessary thing? If I need it does anyone know where I might find one since I don't have a part number to look for? Or does anyone know it's dimensions, especially how thick it is.

Doesn't show it on the DT360A or DT250A on Babbits or Partzilla so you should be safe. It's main purpose is to get the conrod in the center or close as possible. also i dare say if someone built the crank with the pin a few mm through that side it'd stop the pin rubbing the outer bearing ring but highly unlikely. On the RT3 it's shown & is quite thick at 0.3mm or 12 thou. Not sure where'you'd find one now days, but slide the crank into the right side bearing & see where the conrod center line sits--within reason. If it never had a shim before then i'm sure you'll be all good to go. There's never a shim on the other side as crank is bolted hard to the right side & left side is just a super tight fit. So any shim fitted to the left would only float around unless the thickness is calculated perfect, but not so perfect that it pre-loads the bearings. Ignore most of what i said lol. Basically no shim 'should' be needed.

I hope it didn't have one, not really sure. I carried it across the yard and into the house to get it ready for shipping and if it fell off in the yard on the way over I'll never find it. If there was one it wasn't a thick one or I think I'd have noticed it. Still waiting on crank kit and then will have to wait for machine work so it'll be awhile before I get ready to reassemble. Maybe I'll find out more by then. If not I'll take the center line measurement you suggested and see if all looks right. Thanks

Not that experienced with the DT360 but on most models with a shim the right bearing is a slip fit... it it needs a shim and doesn't have one, the crank wheel often rubs the case.
Lots of experience here with the DT360 so hopefully other owners will chime in on whether they had a shim in theirs or not.

Ah, that makes sense. I can see where that could happen. Guess I better not install it till I know for sure if it requires one. In fact, thinking I might hold off on having the machine work done til I have time to see what other nasty surprises this project has in store for me. Things are starting to add up. Thanks for the info.

If the crank bearings are still in the cases, you should be able to slip the crank into the clutch side bearing (that's the side the shim would go) and see if it rubs.

There's a thin shoulder on the center of the crank wheel, surrounding the shaft, about 1 mm in thickness or thereabouts, that will butt up against the inner race and the inner race itself also sticks out from the case about the same amount so I don't think there's any possibility of the crank wheel rubbing the case.

The later 175's that no longer use a shim have that "bump" on the crank wheel.
