I guess the worst outcome is for a bad ignition source coil and it looks like they are not available regardless! The part codes first 3 digits is for model and I do not know what mine is. The next 5 digits is the part number and it looks like # 81312 is used in lots of models. I wonder if they used this coil in lots of models and see no reason to change it unless a problem occured. I hope there is a ground somewhere in the circuit causing no spark. When I get the bike back in my shop I will start tracing the circuit from the mag to the coil and i already have a new coil so I have two to compare. I don't see what could go wrong with a source coil other than shorted wire turns. Keep in touch as I work through this, I appreciate members helping me.

First three digits of part number are critical.

Give it a good sniff if you think the varnish is burnt.

There not really any grounds to go chasing for spark other than Plug coil which is earthed to the frame through its mount. Source coil is either earthed to its mount on the stator plate or through one lighting coil which is earthed to 'its' mount. Providing the motor is earthing--tight in the frame, then nothing else to worry about so far as that goes. I'm talking going direct from mag black source/points/condenser to the plug coil, hence eliminating everything else that might get in the way. I've seen some interesting faults like new points fitted with the wire to the points fitted under the insulating washer, so shorted out. Things like that. Crank key shorn off 'but it will still spark' although timing could be anywhere if the flywheel has moved. Even had a sliver of steel almost like a short piece of wire brush strand sitting between points terminal bolt & earth. Wasn't easy to see.
