1973 DT3 Front fork seals will not fit was created by jcalhoun

I am rebuilding a Yamaha 1973 DT3. The front fork seals ordered online that are listed to fit the bike- do not. (584-23145-50 and 278-2314-51) They are 46x34x10.5mm. The problem is -there is a phalange 6mm down from the top of the front fork tube, so the oil seals stick out by 4mm. I looked on ebay and the same fork seal is listed there also. The original seal had a 46mm flat top that wrapped over and around and under the phalange. Very frustrated that a fork seal is delaying the rebuild. If anyone can help me- I would appreciate it. Thanks.

Post a picture of the fork tube.

Are you certain that the forks have not been changed?

sounds like the shell of the old seal is still in place & only the rubber has been removed. I thought the seal had a wire circlip on top of it but might be thinking of something else.
So i've now gone looking. No5 & No4 in the link.
