Bouncy Front end was created by Timcat

Hello All,
I am a new owner of a 72' 360 RT2 and noticed at around 40 mph the front end gives off a bouncy feeling. The previous owner said the forks has new seals, but I do see a very light film of oil post riding. The bike has a brand new front tire. The current air pressure measured 32 psi. So, I was wonder if high air pressure (32 psi) or low oil or bad springs, or out of balance/true front rim is the problem. I was planning on draining the front fork oil and replacing it first to see it was low (175 cc manual spec) or dirty, then riding it again to see. Just wonder where to start the differential diagnostic process or if someone had the straight up answer. Thank Tim

? To much air pressure
? Low oil or bad seals
? Out of true front rim
? All the above

When car or street motorcycle tires are mounted, the wheels are also balanced with weights fixed to the wheels. I am guessing your wheels are out of balance, not true, and might even have a bent rim.
It's better to remain silent and be considered a fool than to speak and remove all doubt.

Does sound like wheel ballance mainly. But i'd run a lot less air pressure in the tyre. Is yours still a "19 or a "21, whichever i'd go down to about 22psi for the road. I'm guessing you're 'not' talking fork air pressure, incase someone's added valves to the caps 'like we used to on just about everything' lol.

Hi All, Thanks for responding. I took the wheel in to a local shop and the rim has several flat spots that are bad enough that they can't get true and feel the rim needs to be replaced. Tim

I had a very bad case like yours & mine nearly galloped down the road like a horse. Was so bad i ended up with a crankpin taped to the spokes to get it right so something pretty bad must have been going on in the tyre or tube. Could've had one of those very heavy thick enduro tubes in that one that don't puncture easily as did have one tube.
just sit yours on the axle in V blocks with nothing dragging on seals & see what it does. If it stops at he one point positively & regularly then try some weight opposite until you cancel it out. You'd be surprised how much better it will feel on the highway at highway speed, despite slight buckles or flat spots. A good tyre can disguise a less than perfect rim to the feel on the road.

The original rim locks weigh a ton . I balanced my wheels on my DT1 , and they took a lot
of additional weights to balance . Motion Pro make lightweight aluminium rim locks .
These would help considerably in reducing the additional weights required to balance .

Thanks all of the advice. I ended up bringing the wheel to a different shop and we took the wheel lock out and "did" put some stick on weights and it rides a lot smooth. Will plan to address it when weather turns and correct it.

Swoop, I did a search today on rim locks and came across this thread and your suggestion for light weight Motion Pro. I looked them up and they sell one for the 1.85 rim which would be the front on my DT1, but they do not sell any for the 1.95 for the rear wheel. Any suggestions for that application?
Thanks.

Rims on the older bikes are normally 1.60 front (WM1) and 1.85 (WM2) rear. Never heard of a 1.95. Next step is WM3 which is 2.15

Motion Pro lite loc is available for all the above... I've used them for years.

You are correct! Went back and checked the rim and it was a poor stamping and it was a 1.85.
